Take your taste buds on a culinary adventure through Asia at Velaa in Surfers Paradise

The Gold Coast's love affair with Asian-fusion restaurants shows no signs of slowing, with top-notch eateries dotted up and down the coastline all putting their own spin on the geographically diverse cuisine that incorporate flavours and techniques from Thailand, Korea and Japan, to name just a few. Despite it all, Velaa in Surfers Paradise stands out. Not only because it's one of the prettiest cafe's we've gazed upon, but because this modern Thai restaurant brings a refreshing twist to the bustling tourist hub.

Nestled along the light-rail line through Surfers Paradise Boulevard, it’s easy to pass Velaa none the wiser. Those who step through the sliding door will be immediately captivated with pretty pops of lemon, beautiful brass sconces, terrazzo tiles and a neon light that reads ‘Life is short, eat the dessert first,’ which serves as both a reminder and an invitation. The venue is envisioned by Space Cubed Design Studio (Siblings, Orzo and Blowfish) and is helmed by Pat Suwannayok, who also owns the Thai hotspot Cocohut right next door. Drawing inspiration from the diverse culinary landscapes of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Velaa offers a tantalising blend of flavours that caters to both adventurous palates and traditional tastes. The entire menu is also halal certified.

Starters like salmon tartare and prawn toast set the stage for a memorable dining experience, leading to flavour-packed mains such as the aromatic Khao Soi beef topped with crisp noodles. One of the all-time favourites, we’re told, is the innovative Tom Yum prawns omurice, which marries traditional Thai cuisine with a subtle Western flair. The result is something that needs to be experienced first-hand to truly appreciate. Every dish that finds its way onto the concise all-day lunch and dinner offering is an exercise in creativity and precision. If you heed the neon sign’s invitation, the burnt-butter toast is a delight – a decadently thick slab of toast, slightly caramelised and adorned with grilled banana, a scoop of ice cream and lashings of caramel. Complementing the culinary delights is a selection of interesting and tasty beverages, such as the signature Velaa Thai Milk Tea, which is brewed daily using three different kinds of tea imported from Thailand. If you’re keen for a food-filled adventure through the vibrant flavours of Asia, pull up a seat at Velaa.
