Originally constructed in 1907, the sprawling residence perched on the Tweed River has a long history. In the late 60s, it was transformed from a home into a venue opening to the public and again hit the market recently. After immediately falling in love with the building and undertaking a complete restoration, its new owners have now opened the doors to the luxe locale. It is the region’s only venue with direct river access, adding something pretty special to Murwillumbah and surrounds’ ever-growing collection of roadtrip-worthy eateries.
Designed to be a bar, bistro and exclusive wedding venue, Tweed River House offers diners a unique experience – stepping through the doors of the grand old riverside mansion is envisioned to make guests feel like they are taking a step back in time. With uninterrupted views of Wollumbin and the surrounding cane fields of Murwillumbah (not to mention the expansive waterfront vistas), you’ll have trouble deciding whether to perch outside and take in the view, or situate yourself below the oversized chandelier surrounded by that swoon-worthy wallpaper. With lunch, dinner and sunset cocktail sessions on offer, the venue is something truly great for the region.
Expect an ever-evolving menu with locally sourced ingredients and native flavours to remain as a constant, with a focus on plentiful organic ingredients sourced from the lush region. From bar snacks to accompany your hand-crafted cocktail enjoyed in the lounge to long lunches and indulgent degustation dinners, head chef Joseph McGrattan is serving up modern and fresh bites that reflect his training in Michelin-starred restaurants both in Australia and abroad. Striking the perfect balance between intimate spaces and those that accommodate larger groups, Tweed River House is for those keen to savour good company and even better food.
We may not be able to visit in person, but you can follow the Tweed River House instagram to peep the updates from this brand-new venue.
