Canned drinks of the alcoholic variety tend to get a bad rap for being sugar-riddled and generally pretty average in terms of taste, but Small Things Wine is here to upset the apple cart entirely with its cleverly convenient range of canned wine. Made for on-the-go adventures as well as those times you only want to have one (and actually mean it), Small Things is produced in Western Australia by filmmaker and winemaker Ian Batt and a couple of Queensland gents, Cleve Robinson and Michael Powers. The trio came together over their shared belief that wine (and its subsequent enjoyment) shouldn’t be hindered by the container it comes in and set out to do things a little differently. Their mission was pretty simple and yet fraught with surprising complexity – to create the best bloody wine they could in a can so that you can sip whilst on a hike, at the beach, outdoors or on a boat, if that’s where you fancy cracking a tin.
Beyond its innovative packaging, Small Things Wine is minimal intervention (lo-fi) to allow the full fruit flavour to shine. The team goes to great lengths to only select the best small parcels of fruit from Margaret River’s finest and batches are kept intentionally small so they can tend to them by hand. Small Things Wine’s core range features a chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, rosé and shiraz but keep your peepers peeled as there is a new one on the horizon. The 250-ml cans are available in four packs or 24-can cartons and are available to purchase online here or you can find them in person at Quince in Currumbin, Izakaya Midori in Reedy Creek and Poké Poké in Mermaid Beach.
