Pavement Whispers: chicken-wing joints, cheese bars and plastic-free schemes

From whispers of dedicated chicken-wing joints to authentic pizzerias, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Lord of the Wings
Wing lovers, this is your moment. Popular American-style sports diner Lord of the Wings has announced it is heading south with its first Gold Coast venue to open at Robina Town Centre this June. We’ll cut to the chase for the uninitiated – Lord of the Wings (as you would gather) specialises in chicken wings, with traditional fried, grilled and boneless varieties available in more than 20 different sauces. While wings are the hero, the menu also features a number of North American-inspired bites from loaded fries to stacked burgers, ribs, chilli dogs, poutine, jalapeno poppers and eye-popping salads. Our Brisbane pals are well versed in the Lord of the Wings deliciousness, with venues in Indooroopilly and Carindale pumping out the famous finger-lickin’ fare to the masses. The flagship Gold Coast venue will open on Thursday June 14 on The Promenade at Robina Town Centre – we’ll have all the saucy details for you then.

Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar by Fellini
The owners of Ristorante Fellini at Marina Mirage, one the Gold Coast’s longest-standing Italian restaurants, have announced their latest venture – Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar by Fellini. The new 50-seat eatery will take over the space formerly occupied by Fellini’s Pasta Shop in Marina Mirage and will operate separately to its fine-dining sibling Ristorante Fellini. A two-metre wide Italian woodfired oven has been put in place, with authentic pizzas and antipasto platters forming the core of the menu. It will also be the coast’s first ‘mozzarella bar’, where diners can choose from a variety of Italian and Australian mozzarellas to be served alongside a selection of meats and antipasto offerings. Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar by Fellini, the latest project from Fellini Group owners Carlo Percuoco, Richard Burt and Raffaele Di Benedetto, is expected to open softly this weekend. We’ll have all of the delicious details for you soon!

The Cambus Wallace and The Scottish Prince
Just when we thought we couldn’t love these two spirited watering holes any more, owner Dave Ferry steals our hearts by introducing a new environmental scheme to help eliminate plastic at both of his bars. Dave is in the process of ditching plastic straws for good, with 400 steel straws on the way to replace what he predicted would be about 90,000 plastic straws that would otherwise be going to landfill from his two bars alone in the next 12 months  – that’s pretty staggering. At both venues the straws will be for sale for $2.50 each in both long and short varieties (depends how you roll) and that money can be refunded if you decide to return the straw at the end of the night. Genius. Dave (what a guy!) is hoping that the scheme rolled out at The Cambus Wallace and The Scottish Prince will see other Gold Coast bars make the switch too. We’re pretty sure there are a bunch of turtles smiling right now.
