Pavement Whispers: sushi burritos, street-food joints and iconic relocations

From whispers of new Asian eateries to poke-bowl bars, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Elk Espresso 2.0
Elk is undoubtedly one of the coast’s most iconic daytime institutions … and it’s moving. That’s right, the rad space overlooking the soccer field in Broadbeach that we have all come to know and love is about to get knocked down to make way for an apartment development. Don’t fret, pals – there is plenty of sunshine on the horizon for owner Andrew Whiting, who has secured the beach-side space that neighbours Beachside Pavilion (formerly Alto) underneath The Oasis Shopping Centre in Broadbeach. Extensive works on the Oasis precinct made way for the brand-new tenancy, which will be transformed into the new home of Elk by early December. Works are currently underway on the site, and given Andrew’s track record of creating fabulous fit outs (we’re looking at you, Sparrow), then you can safely assume that this will be pretty impressive. We’re told to expect the same Elk vibe, killer coffee and mouth-watering seasonal menu. Given the new venue will open at the crack of summer, a new menu will be launched at the same time – so be prepared for plenty of new eats and treats. Oh, and there will only be a two-day crossover between the original venue closing and the new one opening, so there’s no need to stress. We’ll keep you in the loop.

Suki
Gold Coast, start licking your lips – we’re about to be gifted with a delicious new poke bowl and sushi burrito bar (yes, sushi burritos exist). Suki, one of the first to bring the poke-bowl craze to Brisbane, is opening its first Gold Coast eatery at The Promenade at Robina Town Centre this summer. Suki first unveiled its signature style of poke bowls and sushi burritos in Southbank in April, before rolling out a further two stores in Bulimba and most recently at Newstead’s Gasworks. The concept with Suki is simple – you either roll (in nori or a tortilla) or bowl, choosing from a colourful spread of different rices, greens, proteins and sauces. The opening of the Gasworks venue in September also saw Suki debut a vibrant new menu, featuring ingredients like tempura whiting, organic tempeh and seasonal summer fruits. We’re pretty bloody excited to welcome Suki to our hood – we’ll uncover all the details for you when the doors open around late November.

Junk
If you like the sound of crispy Peking duck spring rolls, soft-shell crab bao and Korean fried chicken wings, then you’ll love the sound of this. Popular Asian street-food eatery Junk is heading our way. Works are currently underway on the new share-food style venue, which is located underneath The Oasis Shopping Centre in Broadbeach. Junk first opened in Mooloolaba in 2014 with venues in Toowoomba and South Bank opening soon after – so it’s safe to say we’re pretty darn pumped that the Gold Coast is next on the cards for this popular Asian gem. For those not familiar with the Junk goodness, expect mouth-banging share dishes with Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Chinese influences. The new venue is expected to open by summer – we’ll keep you posted.

Crafty Cuts
A fancy carvery is coming to our shores. Crafty Cuts, which began in Sydney, is bringing its on-the-go deliciousness to the Gold Coast with a new venue at Pacific Fair. If you’re into slow-roasted barbecue meats (aren’t we all), salads and tasty sandwiches that you just can’t replicate at home, then this could be your new best friend. If you’re watching the carbs (um, why?), then you can choose from meat plates with proteins like beef brisket or roasted chicken, or if bread is your friend then you can choose from a mouth-watering range of sambos with fillings like pork belly and roast lamb. This one is set to land in early 2018 – we can’t wait.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
