Mary’s Malaysian arrives a Pacific Fair with flaky roti, laksa bowls and homestyle chicken chop

Unlike Thai, Japanese and Chinese, authentic Malaysian cuisine isn't quite as abundant on the Gold Coast. Slowly but surely, we're seeing more and more of this delicious Southeast Asian fare permeate the city, much to the delight of the growing number of roti-munching, laksa-loving locals. Those who fall into that ever-expanding category will be pleased to learn of the recent arrival of Mary's Malaysian – a new home-style eatery at Pacific Fair's The Patio precinct, which is the latest venue from the owners of popular street-food dispensary Roti & Buns.

It was back in 2016 when the first Roti & Buns outpost opened on the Gold Coast (at The Kitchens Robina), after its owners spent the previous three years hawking street eats at markets across Brisbane. Buoyed by demand for its made-to-order Malaysian roti and Hong Kong-style buns and dumplings, the Roti & Buns team expanded north with a second venue at Westfield Chermside and another in Maroochydore. With their latest venue, Mary’s Malaysian, owners Stephanie and Julian are taking diners away from street-style eats, instead giving locals a taste of the comforting, traditional dishes found in everyday Malaysian homes.

Named after their daughter, Mary’s offers a small menu of quintessential home-cooked Malaysian dishes – the style of food you’d find in an everyday Malaysian household. Age-old methods, tastes and flavours are recreated to give diners a truly authentic and wholesome experience of Malaysian food, with everything you see on the menu made on-site from scratch, every day. Of course, there’s buttery, flaky roti on offer – it’s always flipped to order, and at Mary’s you can enjoy it plain, with a bowl of chicken curry, with its signature filling (onion, mushroom, cheese and spinach) or with the murtabak filling of spiced beef mince and egg. Theres’s also aromatic bowls of laksa (vegetarian or combination of chicken and prawn), which can be enjoyed with sides like crispy fried prawns, chicken satay skewers and crispy chicken wings, as well as plates of homestyle Hainan chicken chop, served atop rice with gravy and sauces. Those hunting a Malaysian curry can dip their roti into a bowl of Mary’s traditional chicken or the slow-cooked beef rendang, which arrives with rice, cucumber salad and house-made papadums.

Mary’s Malaysian is now open! Head to our Stumble Guide for opening hours and contact details.
