Popular Asian street-food eatery Junk lands on the Gold Coast

Earlier this year, our pals in Brisbane got caught up in a red-hot stir when Maroochydore-born Asian eatery Junk opened its doors. After what seems like a lifetime of anticipation (and salivation), Junk will unveil its first Gold Coast venue in Broadbeach this Thursday November 30. Foodies, get your chopsticks ready – things are about to get hot, steamy and a little bit saucy.

Just last week, Junk opened its second Brisbane location in Coorparoo Square (South Bank was first earlier this year) and now it’s the Gold Coast’s turn for some of the finger-licking goodness, with the eclectic 100-seat Asian eatery taking space beneath The Oasis centre in the heart of Broadbeach. For the uninitiated, Junk has earned its reputation from its top-notch food offering, delivering vibrant hawker-style Asian street food with unique flavours that incorporate Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Chinese cuisines. The continually evolving menu is designed to share, so prepare to tuck in and get your hands dirty – the JFC (Junk fried chicken) is a great place to start.

If you find it hard to go past pillow-soft bao, then you’ve got three to choose from – fried fish, pork belly or braised shitake mushroom with crispy bean curd. Mix things up with the pork scotch eggs in panko crumbs or the deliciously crispy calamari with coconut-caramel dipping sauce. Treat your mouth to the twice-cooked pork belly with green papaya salad and pork crackling, or if you’re really keen to spice things up, go for the grilled king prawns in Singapore chilli sauce. The share dishes are underlined by a bunch of simple yet flavour-packed sides like prawn crackers, fried rice with Chinese sausage and one of the hot favourites – the Gangnam Fries with Korean chilli and nacho cheese sauce. Wash it all down with a Tiger lager, an Asahi or a gin-spiked bubble tea.

Junk Broadbeach officially opens to the public on Thursday November 30.
