Flock to it – local food truck Cycho’s Buffalo Wings opens its first eatery in Southport

When local food truck and market stall Cycho's Buffalo Wings first started in the game four years ago, its menu consisted of crisp, saucy wings in just three flavours. That's it. While it wasn't the biggest menu out there, local finger-licking wing fiends became hooked. Now, after four years of organic growth and tireless work in the wild world of mobile food, the owners of the wing-slinging food truck, Cyrus and Hanzel Platon, have opened their first bricks-and-mortar location in the heart of Southport.

Both Cyrus and Hanzel left careers as international flight attendants to jump into the food scene – and while they may have ditched aeroplane wings for the edible type, the love they developed for international food during their travelling careers has stuck with them, and over the years allowed them to introduce a raft of tasty and diverse flavours to the Cycho’s Buffalo Wings offering. With demand for the delectable morsels soaring, spreading their wings into a permanent location was the logical next step. The duo’s first-ever eatery is located at Australia Fair Metro on Southport’s bustling Young Street, in the premises of now-closed French cafe, Paris Brest. While its saucy wings will always be king, the Cycho’s team is making the most of having a commercial kitchen (as opposed to the back of a truck) and have beefed up the menu to include burgers, sliders, loaded fries, desserts and more.

The wings are offered in ten different international flavours, from classic spicy buffalo to Japanese-style miso and orange, Korean-style chilli-pepper mayo, a punchy Chinese five-spice with chilli, a Vietnamese-inspired palm sugar, lime juice and roasted garlic combination, and a simmering vinegar-infused Filipino-style sauce. The towering milk-bun burgers range from a classic cheeseburger to an Asian-style soft-shell-crab burger, as well as a buffalo chicken burger that comes loaded with a juicy deep-fried thigh fillet, buffalo sauce, smoked cheddar and coleslaw. You’ll also find smaller sliders in flavours like sticky pork belly and kimchi, and tofu with grilled enoki, as well as a series of loaded fries – think Japanese-style okonomiyaki fries with tonkatsu sauce and bonito flakes, and the ‘gangnam style’ with beef bulgogi, grilled kimchi and chilli mayo. There are a bunch of beers on tap, a small selection of wines and decadent milkshakes to chase your feast with, while sweet tooths looking for a finisher can gobble deep-fried ice-cream with cornflakes.
