Munch on Korean-style crispy fried chicken at Southport’s Chikor

If you're on a diet, look away! We're about to talk about fried chicken. That's right, succulent chicken pieces that are juicy and tender on the inside and deliciously crispy on the outside. If you can't resist the crunch, then get the wet wipes out because an eatery decided to Korean-style fried-chicken has just opened in Southport. It's called Chikor and you need to get acquainted right now.

Just take a moment to let that all sink in … breathe … annnnd we’re back. Chikor, which stands for ‘chicken of Korea’, quietly opened its doors in the Australia Fair Metro precinct last week. The concept is the brainchild of Korean-born chef Ty Byun, who created the casual eatery in a bid to bring the authentic tastes of traditional Korean fried chicken to the Gold Coast – and it’s a far cry from the oil-coated morsels that we’re used to. Rather, the fried delights here are super-light, very crispy and there’s next-to-no residual grease – but no matter how nicely you ask, Ty won’t give away his secret recipe (we already tried).

The menu is short, concise and clearly very heavy on the fried chicken – just the way we like it. There are five different varieties of fried chicken to choose from – original crispy, sweet and spicy, volcano (aka very hot), honey soy and sweet garlic. While the sauces add that shiny glaze and a flavoursome zing, the crispness that lies beneath is retained … if you’re a true fried-chicken lover, you’ll appreciate that fact. The menu also features various fried-chicken burgers with fries, Japanese-style chicken karaage, teriyaki chicken and a bunch of chicken-themed sides like sizzling spicy chicken and a crispy-chicken salad for those that want or need a little bit of greenery.

That’s a whole lotta chicken. Keen for a taste? Head over to our Stumble Guide for Chikor’s opening hours and location.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
