Lenny Pizzeria & Bar is the latest culinary offering from Robert Morwood, one of the original founders of Burleigh Heads institution Justin Lane, alongside fellow chef Oliver Botha, who worked as an apprentice in the early days of Justin Lane. Since parting ways with the beachside eatery, Rob has been on the lookout for a space to create something special. After a couple of false starts, this incredible site presented itself in the heart of Mudgeeraba. In terms of the menu, there’s a succinct scattering of small plates including arancini, meatballs, Sicilian olives and bruschetta, alongside a trio of vibrant and fresh salads. The hero, however, is the pizza. Made using a 72-hour fermented dough, the base is super-light and fluffy. There are 11 different combinations to choose from, including classics such as Margherita and pepperoni drizzled with hot honey alongside some slightly left-of-centre additions of Aleppo spiced lamb drizzled with dill cream, and butternut pumpkin with spiced kale, whipped fetta and salsa verde. Just be sure to leave some room for a serving of the venue’s house-made ice-cream, which changes regularly, and features taste-bud-tingling creations such as lemongrass and crystallised ginger. As for the drinkables, expect a scattering of wines spanning red, white, sparkling and rosé alongside the venue’s own Lenny’s Session Ale and a clutch of cocktails including Junior’s espresso martini (created in partnership with the nearby Junior’s Deli) and spirits. Oh, and if your name is Lenny (and you can prove it), you can score a spot on the Lenny wall of fame.
