If you sometimes get a little nostalgic for the ‘good old days’ you’ll find your cafe kindred in Bilinga’s new Golden Times cafe. A nod to a simpler time, as well as the street in which it resides, the new cafe has transformed the former Mervyn Roy’s into a quaint, neighbourhood locale slinging quality coffee and humble, homestyle nosh. Speaking of, the concise double-page menu features a clutch of classics such as eggs your way on Burleigh Baker sourdough alongside the popular eggs-Benny bagel with smoked salmon. Those looking for a dose of nostalgia can dive back into their childhood with Weet-Bix topped with tinned peaches and a dollop of cream but if you fancy something a little different, wrap your mitts around a long roll loaded with fried egg, cucumber, coriander, crispy fried onions and a drizzle of mayo (hot tip, add the marinated eggplant). Although underpinned by simplicity, the dishes are elevated using house-made ferments and pickles, a homage to yesteryear when people would preserve what’s in their fridge rather than throw it out. There’s also a rotating selection of specials so there will always be an excellent reason to stop in at Golden Times.
