Sink your teeth into some Greek goodness at The Yiros Shop in Burleigh Heads

Regardless of whether you know them as gyros or yiros, one thing that isn’t up for debate is how deeply satisfying it is sinking your teeth into the pillowy pita and the salivation-worthy slow-cooked meat and fat chips stuffed inside. Well, Greek-loving Gold Coasters, we have some exciting news – Brisbane's The Yiros Shop has made its way down the M1 to open its first flagship location in Burleigh Heads. Here's what's on offer ...

If you have spent any time eating and drinking your way around Greece or its islands (remember travel?), it’s fairly certain that at some point on your culinary adventure you were introduced to the humble yiros. If you’ve not yet had the pleasure, allow us to introduce you. A yiros (or gyros) starts with a fluffy pita-bread base that is stuffed to busting point with succulent chicken, pork or lamb, salad, fat chips and topped with lashings of tzatziki. It’s happiness plain and simple – that’s precisely what you will find at Burleigh’s new eatery. Housed in the former home of The Coffee Club on James Street, the high-profile corner site provides the perfect perch to enjoy a spot of people-watching with a yiros in one hand and a Mythos beer in the other. The Yiros Shop is the work of father and son duo James and Nick Mitrossilis, who opened their first shop in James Street, Fortitude Valley in 2014. Since then, the empire has grown to include seven locations around Brisbane (with more in the works) and judging from the line spilling out the door and down the block on opening weekend, it seems that Gold Coasters are pretty darn excited to get a taste.

So, what’s on the menu? Well, yiros. Eight different kinds, to be exact – filled with the likes of grilled haloumi, wagyu beef, whiting-fish fillet, chicken, pork keftethes or slow-cooked lamb shoulder. The Greek-inspired menu also offers a selection of share plates, snack boxes, salads, sides and desserts. Can’t decide? Opt for the share plate, which offers a little taste of everything including your choice of marinated meat, salad, grilled pita, chips and tzatziki and if it’s a carb-induced food coma you seek, the snack box is the perfect choice with golden chips topped with meat and sauce (yum!). Wash it down with Mythos beer or, if the sun is shining, a glass of frozé and you have yourself a fine Greek feast. Hot tip, just be sure to leave room for a serve of the Nutella baklava. There are plans to extend into breakfast (hello bacon-filled yiros) but for now it’s just lunch and dinner.
