From the ocean to The Oxley – Sunkist Eatery unveils a fresh new seafood focus and extended hours

Since opening the eagerly anticipated first stage, The Oxley 1823 has, unsurprisingly, become a hive of activity. From the first whir of Buoy's coffee machine right through until the doors close, there's a seemingly never-ending stream of caffeine seekers, folks in search of a feed and shoppers milling about making the most of the culinary and lifestyle destination. The precinct's newest nosh spot, Sunkist Eatery, has recently debuted a seafood-centric menu featuring what could very well be some of the city's freshest oceanic delights. Here's everything you need to know ...

Daniel Veitch, the visionary behind The Oxley 1823, grew up fishing with his dad. Every weekend they were on a boat, so he was always spoilt with the freshest seafood imaginable. It was this passion for freshness and quality that has underpinned The Oxley 1823’s new seafood selection. Not content with the regular seafood-procurement process, which can leave the fish sitting on a boat for up to 20 days, Daniel has forged partnerships with trawlers and fisherman that will see him put in an order one day, the fish caught that night and slide into The Oxley’s fridge the very next day. If you’re an avid home cook, head to the freezer section at the back of the grocer and you’ll find snap-frozen red emperor fillets, alongside prawns, bugs and a mouth-watering array of fare from the ocean to The Oxley.

If, however, you prefer to leave the cooking to the chefs, you’re in excellent hands at Sunkist Eatery. Continuing the venue’s ethos of good food, flavours and hyper-local produce, the new Sunkist menu targets the lunch and dinner crowd with fish and chips, which is available grilled, battered or crumbed. If you’re in the mood for something a little fancier, fill the void with grilled octopus, Moreton Bay bugs and Mooloolaba king prawns alongside mixed platters. To make the most of Sunkist Eatery’s new menu items, the crew has extended trading until 8:30 pm every night. The diner at Sunkist is envisaged as a family-friendly option for the precinct that will ultimately take people from early morning coffee right through to late-night wines.

Next on the radar at The Oxley 1823 will be a show-stopping Latin American concept from the group behind Burleigh’s Rick Shores and Brisbane’s Southside. The venue, we’re told, will spread across two levels and feature an open-air rooftop bar and ceviche bar. Executive chef James Brady has spent last year skipping around some of the world’s top Mexican and Latin American restaurants, so suffice to say we’re excited to see what they have planned. There are also whispers of a laneway wine bar, but we’ll have details for you oh-so-soon.

Sunkist Eatery is open daily at The Oxley 1823 from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm. The grocer closes at 7:30 pm.
