Sink your teeth into a loaded bagel from Broadbeach’s new O Bagel

If you’ve spent any time eating and drinking your way around the great U.S. of A., it’s pretty likely that you sunk your teeth into a deliciously doughy bagel at some point in your travels. Schmeared with cream cheese or loaded with an array of cured meat, bagels are big business in America. Here in Australia, or perhaps more specifically, the Gold Coast, it seems we're a little slow on the uptake with croissants and sourdough stealing the limelight. O Bagel has arrived in Broadbeach to rectify this with its range of beautiful boiled and baked bagels. Here's everything you need to know ...

If your jaw and stomach begin to quiver at the very mention of the word bagel, you need O Bagel in your life. A far cry from the brick-like gut-bombs we’ve known in the past, O Bagel is here to reacquaint you with what a proper bagel should look (and taste) like. A golden-brown exterior that yields to a fluffy, soft bread-like inner, and topped with a mouth-watering array of fillings including house-made egg salad, wood-smoked ham, lettuce, Swiss cheese and tomato relish, it’s a feast for all of your senses. The quaint bagel slinger has popped up along the Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach (the space formerly occupied by D Point Ten) and is the handiwork of Nick Jang – a chef with 12 years of experience. Somewhere in his travels along the West Coast of America, Nick fell head-over-heels in love with bagels. Lines winding down the street were common practice and he wondered why we don’t have many (any) dedicated bagel cafes on the Gold Coast.

After eight long months of testing, tweaking and trying different variations, Nick perfected the recipe with just the right amount of chewiness and density, so you don’t need to immediately have a nap after eating. O Bagel has six different bagel bases to choose from (plain, sesame, poppy seed, spinach and cheese, blueberry and everything), all of which are hand-rolled, boiled and baked daily. Here comes the fun part – you can opt for something simple, such as the Easy Avo (avocado, whipped feta, spinach and tomato) and add on extras including a hashbrown and bacon, for example, or leave the flavour pairing to the experts and select one of seven seriously next-level sandwich selections. Meat-lovers will salivate at the sight of the Big Mama (salami, wood-smoked ham, Swiss cheese, rocket, tomato and seeded mustard mayo) and if you’re feeling a little fancy, the Classy Lox is your guy (48-hour cured salmon, soft-herb cream cheese, baby capers, tomato and red onion). If you’re in need of a little pick-me-up, O Bagel serves Burleigh’s Two Amigos cold brew, which you can enjoy with coconut water or with caramel and oat milk, as well as a delightfully beautifully refreshing hibiscus lemon iced tea and passionfruit mojito to wash your bagel down.

O Bagel is open now! Roll over to our Stumble Guide for opening times.
