Seaside sips – get your day off to a sensational start with breakfast by the ocean at Castaway Coffee Bar

It's often thought that a city's economic health could be determined by the number of cranes dotted along the coastline. If that's the barometer, the Gold Coast is thriving. Arguably one of the most significant projects coming to life along The Esplanade at Surfers Paradise is Ocean by Meriton. Soaring 76 levels, it's certainly one of the tallest and most impressive. As construction begins to wrap up, we've got our first taste of the retail tenants – it's called Castaway Coffee Bar, a wholesome cafe slinging organic coffee and nourishing nosh.

Gold Coast locals Tina and Daniel Chaff had watched the construction of Ocean by Meriton with a vested interest. With a couple of successful hospitality venues under their belt already, the perceptive pair gazed upon the ground-floor retail space with eager eyes. The husband-and-wife team visualised a laid-back locale that catered to the building’s permanent residents as well as the holidaymakers with a casual menu that meanders from breakfast right through to lazy afternoons, with the option to extend into evenings. A place where you could sip your coffee and watch the waves roll in of a morning, and pop back later in the day for a beer and a bite. Friends, that’s exactly what you can expect from Castaway Coffee Bar.

Having opened its doors in January, the neighbourhood noshery has become a bustling hive of activity. The menu caters to traditional tastes with all of your favourites present and accounted for – think smashed avocado, chilli eggs and a seriously big breakfast with all of the trimmings. Plant-based pals can tuck into the seriously drool-worthy coconut pancakes topped with berries, caramelised banana and lashings of maple syrup, and there’s a tempting array of freshly baked danishes and pastries in the cabinet. From midday, the offering expands to include a clutch of burgers ranging from panko-crumbed schnitzel to barbecue pulled pork with housemade slaw, salt-and-pepper calamari and grilled Atlantic salmon with a generous dollop of hollandaise. As for the drinkables, the coffee crowd will love the Sacred Grounds organic speciality brews, made that little bit more impressive by the incredible latte art by the venue’s talented barista Juan Escobar, who, fun fact, is competing at the ASCA Pauls Professional Australian Latte Art Championship. Non-coffee folk will love the vast selection of fresh juices and smoothies and if you’re in the mood for something a little more, Castaway Coffee Bar is fully licensed with a sizeable range of cocktails, spritzs and wine.
