Northern newbie Bear Boy Espresso arrives in Helensvale with specialty brews and top-notch nosh

In terms of new cafes (and restaurants, for that matter) much of the activity generally gravitates down the southern end of the Gold Coast. So, when we hear about new arrivals up north, we jump at the chance to share the news with you guys. Allow us to introduce you to Bear Boy Espresso, a sleek new daytime hang that has recently opened on Hope Island Road in Helensvale, just a stones throw from the M1.

Northern Gold Coast folk, you have Brodie Howard to thank for this new specialty coffee haven. A few years back, Brodie founded successful event-catering business Guilty Pleasure Platters (which she still owns), however recently set her sights firmly on bringing a slice of the southern Gold Coast’s cafe culture to the northern end. The new 90-seat Bear Boy Espresso, shaped with distinctive terracotta-hued rendered walls and bench tops, promises to fill the gap for speciality coffee (Single O is pouring) and top-notch nosh from its breezy digs in the new Dining Quarter precinct that forms part of Homeworld Helensvale.

Tucked at the rear of the aesthetically pleasing space is an action-packed kitchen dishing out an all-day breakfast menu, which is later joined by a handful of lunch options. The menu kicks off with simple bites like toasts, eggs your way and breakfast burgers, while those looking for a little extra jazz can opt for dishes like pumpkin, carrot, ginger and chickpea croquettes with romesco and chimichurri, oven-baked hotcakes with vanilla-bean mascarpone, and buttermilk fried chicken atop potato waffles with poached eggs and gochujang-laced hollandaise. Got yourself a sweet tooth? Satisfy the hankering with cinnamon-spiced deep-fried bao buns filled with fresh mango, mango compote and coconut ice-cream. Come lunchtime, there’s everything from colourful salad bowls topped with house falafel, pickled cabbage and ginger puree, to juicy beef burgers with maple bacon, bearnaise sauce, aged red cheddar and relish.

Keen to check out Bear Boy Espresso? You’ll find its opening hours, address and contact details over in our Stumble Guide.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
