Witness the city’s evolution at HOTA’s We are Gold Coast exhibition

The Gold Coast oft gets a pretty crummy wrap from uninformed out-of-towners who still scoff into their soy latte at the very mention of the Gold Coast, believing the city is nothing more than surf, Schoolies and theme parks. But the truth is that we, its residents, know that those outdated stereotypes couldn't be further from the truth. We are Gold Coast: works from the Gallery at HOTA is a brand-new exhibition that shines a light on the city's evolution.

Whilst it’s not news to those of us who are lucky enough to call this place home, it seems that some of our interstate friends may have missed the memo that the Gold Coast is not the same place it used to be. This fine city of ours has well and truly come of age, a change that is being driven by youthful and infectious energy, incredible natural wonders and a talented, thriving artistic community. We are Gold Coast exhibition at HOTA shines a spotlight on this evolution and provides a visual exploration of our identity and sense of place.

The collection juxtaposes the experience from 20th century artists including Lloyd Rees, Fred Williams, Albert Tucker, Vida Lahey, Ethel Carrick Fox, Betty Quelhurst, Jeff Carter, and Graham Burstow against works by contemporary artists who began their career on the Gold Coast or continue to call the Gold Coast home. Among the homegrown talent on display is Michael Zavros, Scott Redford, Chris Bennie, Anna Carey, Victoria Reichelt and Donna Marcus. The result is a moving and exciting exhibition that invites you to take a look at the Gold Coast through the ages and be proud to be a Gold Coaster. We are Gold Coast is on display at HOTA from May 12 to July 15.
