Marvel at the mysteries of the big blue at the Ocean Film Festival at HOTA

Prepare to be mesmerised – the Ocean Film Festival World Tour 2020 is returning to the Gold Coast this March to showcase captivating, inspirational and educational footage from some of the world's best independent filmmakers. The iconic festival, which aims to inspire viewers to explore, respect, enjoy and ultimately protect our oceans, will set sail at HOTA for two nights only from March 11–12.

The Ocean Film Festival World Tour features an intriguing roster of short films and spectacular cinematography, with pieces of varying lengths and styles covering topics like ocean adventure and exploration, the oceanic environment, marine creatures, ocean-related sports, coastal cultures and more. Expect to witness never-before-seen footage, fascinating interviews and insightful narrations about the big blue. The Ocean Film Festival was founded seven years ago on the northern beach of Sydney, and while the 2020 instalment of the festival will be viewed more than 100 times in ten different countries, its first priority is sharing the beauty and power of the ocean with Australians, and giving local filmmakers the chance to have their work seen on the big screen. Following a rigorous selection process, two Australian filmmakers have made it into the line-up alongside a bill of international names. The homegrown festival will also be shown in 32 Australian towns, before wowing viewers in America, the UK, China and Singapore.

Film buffs and ocean lovers will see Sydney filmmaker Spencer Frost’s work in In A Corner of the Earth, which follows surfer and Sydney local Fraser Dovel as the makes the head-spinning transition from warm-water surfing to tackling the icy, treacherous waters of the arctic. There’s also Swimming With Gentle Giants by Adelaide filmmaker Stefan Andrews, who dives under water with award-winning wildlife photographer and filmmaker Scott Portelli, exploring Portelli’s close connection with the humpback whales.

Want to find out more about the Ocean Film Festival and its sea-worthy line-up of short films? Dive into the Ocean Film Festival website to view the full program.

If you’re keen to experience the wonders of the sea on March 11–12 at HOTA, nab your tickets here.
