For former Melbourne restaurateur Bonnie Cullen, making a move to the Gold Coast and opening a Monday-to-Friday cafe seemed like a dream come true. Her passion for hospitality could still be fulfilled, the days would be warm and sunny, and there was no need for back-breaking shifts until the wee hours. Though, just weeks before opening her namesake venture Bonnie's Cafe in Ashmore, the global pandemic hit.

Going against advice from friends, Bonnie stuck to her guns, finished the fit-out of the cafe and opened the roller door – not knowing if northern locals would, given the current state of the world, want to flock to a warehouse-style eatery and load up on half-kilo servings of slow-cooked meats, sub-style sandwiches and stacked pickle-topped burgers. Turns out, they did. You’ll find Bonnie’s on Expo Court, slinging local Cr8ive coffee (roasted nearby in Nerang), morning eats and hearty lunch fare from 6:00 am daily.

The Bonnie’s menu aims to please the crowds from morning to afternoon, kicking off with bacon-and-egg English muffins, simple smashed avo, and a maple-bacon hash-brown stack smothered in hollandaise. Later on, it’s all about burgers (grilled beef, chicken, fish and veg) towering high on buttery brioche buns, and sub-style sandwiches with lip-smacking fillings like juicy pulled beef – all best sided with old-school gravy-smothered chips. The offering of 15-hour slow-cooked meats are also a hot contender for lunch orders – think rosemary lamb shoulder, melt-in-your-mouth mustard beef and slow-roasted chicken, which you can have on a mixed plate with Greek salad and chips, or lovingly jammed inside a shiny brioche sub.

Bonnie’s Cafe is now open! Scoot to the Stumble Guide listing for its address, opening hours and contact details.
