Situated 2.5-km and a 10-minute boat ride offshore from The Spit in Main Beach, Wonder Reef is the latest diver’s oasis that’s making a splash. The world-class $5-million attraction is an innovative fusion of art, science and engineering design where experienced divers can descend to a depth of 30 metres beneath the surface. Divers will also be able to swim around nine giant buoyant reef sculptures that have become home to hundreds of different marine life species since its conception. The reef is home to a whole bunch of underwater creatures including lobsters, octopus, tropical fish, turtles and giant gropers, as well as a colourful array of coral, which was planted at the site in late 2021 helping to create a vibrant underwater wonderland.
The underwater project is a joint initiative between City of Gold Coast and the Queensland Government and is another picturesque addition to Queensland’s already jam-packed roster of diving sites. Regular dive tours will be operated by Gold Coast Dive Adventures and Queensland Scuba Diving, while experienced divers with their own boat and dive equipment are able to book a public mooring. Bookings can be made at the Wonder Reef website. It’s time to grab the snorkels!
