Licensed restaurants and cafes were made aware of the welcome changes late yesterday (Monday March 23), with many taking to social media to share the news with their customers that they can now sell alcohol, after earlier in the week being restricted to takeaway-only food service. Not only is this a slight relief for the bottom line of restaurants and cafes that have been forced to shake up their business models to adhere to restrictions, it’s also great news for locals doing the right thing and avoiding larger bottle shops, or for those self-isolating or in quarantine.

Now for the rules. The changes to the liquor licensing, which you can view here on the Queensland Government website, state that takeaway alcohol can only be supplied in conjunction with a takeaway food order, and can only consist of bottled or canned beer, wine, cider and ready-to-drink beverages, such as premixed spirits. A maximum of 2.25 litres of alcohol applies – that means restaurants and cafes can only supply up to 2.25 litres per takeaway food order. So, if you’re stressing about your booze supplies at home, fear not – you can now tack on a bottle of pinot (or two) with your pasta order – and your local will love you for it.
