Ella Fence

Ella Fence, Singer, songwriter, performer

I write a lot when I’m in love, or in pain, or confused about something I need to unpack ...

In Short ...

Gold Coast singer-songwriter Ella Fence is one talented human. The award-winning musician approaches her craft with passion and authenticity, creating mesmerising, powerful and smooth compilations. Ella Fence is fresh from releasing her latest track 'Cocaine', the second single to be released from her bold new EP, which brings a unique mix of bad-ass cinematic-electro-pop and powerhouse vocals to the table. We caught up with Ella to chat about her new tune, killer collaborations, motel-room gigs and ... Drake.

Congratulations on the official release of your new track ‘Cocaine’ ft Vinnie LaDuce, which is the second single released from your new EP! We’re told the track is ‘not about drugs, and not about love’.Tell us more about it –  what do you hope that the listener gets from ‘Cocaine’?
Thank you! Yes you’re right, the track isn’t about drugs. ‘Cocaine’ is a song about experiences, overshadowed by venom; and the art of freeing yourself. Vinnie LaDuce and I started writing the track about the feeling of being ‘on the outside’ of the fun and feelings of entrapment; when you’re searching for freedom. Through acknowledging these feelings within myself, writing the song and then releasing it – I’m now listening to what I need more and am living a freer, more fulfilling life.

The new film clip is due out this Friday July 14 – what was it like conceptualising the track and putting it together visually?
It’s been an incredible experience working so closely with so many fantastic creatives on this clip. We started discussions on the feelings and meanings behind the song, and where those tend to appear in a person’s life. We’ve then conceptualised different scenes and stories to reflect that. There are intertwined scenes within the clip that are brought together, but each have their own story to tell.

What do you find yourself drawing upon for motivation and inspiration at the moment?
Collaborations! I just spent the weekend on the Sunshine Coast songwriting with Christian Patey; he is such a rad dude and so talented. The film clip has been a beautiful collaboration too, and of course working on the EP with Vinnie LaDuce, I find I thrive the most and have the most fun when I’m working with and empowering other people.

What can we expect from Ella Fence over the next 12 months?
There are more tracks in the vault from the collaboration I did with Vinnie LaDuce, so I’m planning to release each with their own conceptual story and artistic intentions, both visually and sonically. Next up I will be supporting Christian Patey on a couple of the shows that he is doing for his single launch tour; Saturday August 5 at the Byron Brewery and Saturday 19 August at The Milk Factory! Plus a sneaky tour – maybe more secret shows like on the Motel Tour – where the band and I took over and played intimate shows inside motel rooms in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Sydney and Melbourne – picture champagne, a full PA system, beds against the walls for soundproofing. It was wild. Local GC videographer James Stapleton came on tour with us and made episodes from the shows.

What’s a typical day like in the life of Ella Fence?
I used to slay dragons and make music, now I just make music.

Best piece of advice you’ve received in your career or life?
From Isabella Manfredi (The Preatures) – “I just want to be happy, and I want the art to be good”

What would you consider to be some of the major influences in your life and work?
I write a lot when I’m in love, or in pain, or confused about something I need to unpack. The other day I wrote a beat to ‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’ from The Wizard of Oz though, so who knows, being random is also a good time.

What musician (living or dead) would be your dream collaboration partner?
Probably Drake because obviously.

Only a Gold Coast local would know…
How awesome Reis Maher is as a trainer at F45 Robina.

Finally, any words you live by?
Everything I do either involves loving, exploring, creating, or all three things. So I guess I live by that as a rule.
