Wonderbird is a brand-new chook nook on the Gold Coast Highway in Burleigh Heads that is all about that finger-lickin’ chicken. The casual eatery has forgone the regular run-of-the-mill chicken coating in favour of a lighter, gluten-free alternative that not only absorbs less oil but features native Australian flavours including lemon myrtle and saltbush, resulting in a tastier, better-for-you alternative to other fast-food alternatives. The chicken is also free-range and is available fried or grilled (there’s also a plant-based option for meat-free mates). Once you’ve decided how you want your chicken, you are faced with another – do you fancy it in a salad with mango and basil, on a burger or as-is with a side of chips. Then comes the sauce quandary – rather than just your regular aioli and tomato options, Wonderbird has added a couple of fiery creations including jalapeno and lemon myrtle and watermelon and habanero, but be warned – they pack a flavour punch.
