Their shades may offer a chic nod to the styles of the past, but this brand is certainly looking towards the future with its environmentally conscious ethos.

Vintage charms meet forward-thinking initiatives at Velvet Canyon, an international eyewear brand based across Byron Bay and LA. Founded by photographer Ali Mitton and sisters Bec Nolan and Cass Moase, Velvet Canyon pulls style inspiration from the 1960s and ’70s with classic silhouettes and an old-school colour palette, combining it with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Each pair of glasses is made from high-quality materials including renewable acetate frames, custom-tinted lenses and champagne gold detailing, all snugly fit into a biodegradable, cruelty-free vegan leather pouch.

Velvet Canyon’s focus on positive change extends to its solar-powered studio, pledge to ban animal products and minimise plastic usage (i.e. no mailer bags, bubble wrap or individually plastic wrapped products) and donations to charities including the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and SisterWorks. Pick your sunny style of choice through Velvet Canyon online, via the Posse website or head in to Wolfe and Ordnance in Fortitude Valley, Kind Curations on the Gold Coast or Alterior Motif on the Sunshine Coast.
