Swimwear label Hakea inspires confidence in and out of the water through elegance and functionality

If you're the type of gal that struggles to find swimwear and surfwear that looks great, is functional and makes you feel good about yourself while you're wearing it, then take a peek at Byron Bay-based label Hakea, which aims to inspire confidence with thoughtful and elegant shapes and styles. Hakea is different (in a good way) and it could well be your swimwear saviour.

Hakea is the brainchild of Byron Bay-based designer Casey Eastwell, who created the brand out of her personal frustration with the lack of swimwear on the market that made her feel confident or resembled her own style. The result was a brand that offers functional, versatile swim and surf wear that celebrates the female form and doubles as everyday wear. The recently launched ‘Ochre’ series is Hakea’s second complete swimwear collection. It’s designed by and for women, and features a range of mix-and-match separates, one pieces and rash guards. The series also features a painting-style print collaboration with Melbourne-based artist Zev Tropp, which is inspired by tonal and rolling desert landscapes.

The bikini tops and bottoms, released in a palette of mustard, clay, olive, taupe, black and more, offer full or partial coverage for those not into the ‘tiny bikinis’, while the cropped rash guards and long-sleeve surf suits offer a solution for surfing females who want form-flattering pieces without compromising on sun protection or quality. The best part? It doubles as daywear – you can pair that one piece or rash guard with your favourite shorts or skirt. Plus, it’s all crafted from recycled Italian lycra, which is woven from regenerated fishing nets and ocean-gathered waste – you see, not only is Hakea creating pieces for the female form, the brand actually gives a damn about the ocean. What a dream.
