Dropping on Disney+ on Friday July 31, Black Is King is written, directed and executive-produced by none other than Queen B herself. The release comes just one year after Disney’s The Lion King remake hit theatres, where Beyoncé lent her soothing melodic voice to play lioness Nala and also sang on the film’s hit soundtrack. Described by Disney as a “celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience”, Black is King reimagines lessons of The Lion King and features rich visuals “that celebrate Black resilience and culture”.
The film, which is based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift, features an all-star cast of characters including artists from the album and some familiar famous faces. Expect the likes of Childish Gambino (who played Simba in the film), Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Jessie Reyez, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage and Tekno. Keeping it in the pride, Jay Z and even Blue Ivy – who just won her first BET award for her work on ‘Brown Skin Girl’, which features on The Lion King album – will both make appearances in the film.
