Dragons, sibling drama and Ryan Reynolds docuseries – the best series to watch this month

Calling all culture enthusiasts and streaming-service addicts! If you're keen to snuggle up on the couch and binge your way through a new TV series, then we have some good news for you – we have rounded up some of the best series gracing our screens this month. Whether you're into dragon-filled fantasy epics, Irish comedy-thrillers or deliciously decadent kitchen dramas, we have got a streaming gem for you.

House of the Dragon – BINGE
Well and truly proving that Game of Thrones is still very much front of mind for TV fans, House of the Dragon might be responsible for the resurgence of post-watch water-cooler conversation. As viscerally violent and gorgeous to watch as its predecessor, this prequel follows the story of the House Targaryen 200 years before the events of GOT (way before Daenerys burns Kings Landing to the ground). It stars Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke and Australia’s own Milly Alcock. The first episode is on BINGE, with more to come weekly.

Bad Sisters – Apple TV+
An unconventional family and a murder plot may seem like the perfect ingredients for a winning television series, and Bad Sisters proves that the recipe on the box is right. The series is an Irish dark comedy created by and starring Sharon Horgan as part of her deal with Apple TV+. It follows the lives of the Garvey sisters, who are bound together by the premature death of their parents and a promise to always protect one another. The series also stars Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson (Bono’s daughter). Catch this unmissable show on Apple TV+.

The Bear – Disney +
Current or ex-hospo players, consider this your warning – this next show on our list might hit a little too close to home. The Bear follows a young chef from the fine dining world called Carmy (played by Jeremy Allen White), who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop after the heartbreaking death of his brother. This fast-paced series has won the hearts (and stomachs) of critics and audiences in the US, and now it’s soon to be our turn for a bite. The Bear is set to hit Disney+ on August 31. You’ll be reciting “yes chef” in no time.

Welcome to Wrexham – Disney +
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney and everyone’s favourite funnyman Ryan Reynolds have come together in the name of one thing – football. Last year, the pair acquired the Welsh football team Wrexham AFC, which was on the brink of collapse before the takeover. Docuseries Welcome to Wrexham follows the underdog football team after the two Hollywood stars acquire the club, which has risen in the rankings of the National League during and after takeover. The series will start streaming on August 25 on Disney +.

Never Have I Ever – Netflix
Who would have thought that a show narrated by tennis star John McEnroe would be the best coming-of-age story to hit streaming services in years? Not us, that’s for sure. We’re now three seasons deep into watching our favourite Indian-American teen Devi spruce up her social status and tackle high-school problems like boys and college head on – and this season is full of the aforementioned drama. Honest, smart, sweet and only sometimes cringe – this Mindy Kaling-created gem is sure to put a smile on your dial. Never Have I Ever season three is now streaming on Netflix.
