Two Wise Fish brings fancy fish and chips to Mermaid Waters

For Belinda Gates, a third generation fish and chip shop owner, fish is in her blood. Her grandfather owned a dozen or so, her father was a fishmonger, her uncles are fishermen and her sister owns one too – so it's fair to say she knows a thing or two about really good fish. Belinda and her husband Nick have just followed in her family's footsteps once again to open a fish and chip shop, but not as you know it.

Two Wise Fish has surfaced in the Waterway Village precinct at Mermaid Waters and whilst fish and chipperies aren’t normally known for their remarkable fit-outs, nothing about Two Wise Fish is what you would call normal. From the white timber-clad exterior to the ropes draped across the ceiling and drop lights illuminating miscellaneous treasures from the deep, the venue is a world removed from the old fish and chip shop that previously occupied the space. But then again, when you recruit the same company responsible for the fit-out for Aloha and Etsu as well as its neighbour Double Barrel Kitchen, you would expect nothing less and Two Wise Fish definitely does not disappoint.

Belinda and Nick have put her family’s extensive history and intricate knowledge to use and created a menu that focusses on amazing quality locally-caught fish. Each day the specialty offering changes depending on what the trawlers bring in, some days it’s redthroat emperor other days it’s reef cod so while you never know in advance what’s on offer, you know it’s going to be good. It’s pretty apparent from the moment you step foot through the door that they take their seafood pretty seriously, even the potato scallops aren’t your run-of-the-mill frozen variety, instead Belinda and the crew hand make them daily. If fish and chips floats your boat, Two Wise Fish is definitely one to check out.
