The round-up: wrap your mitts around the Gold Coast’s best pies

If winter has you craving deliciously warm comfort food, you’re not alone! Sometimes you just can’t beat the satisfying crunch of the crispy, flaky exterior and the gooey, steamy centre of a good old-fashioned pie. From not-so-dirty street pies to the more exotic varieties, we’ve round-up some of the coast’s best pies to sink your teeth into.

Pie Pie, Burleigh Heads: Like the sound of brioche cheeseburger pies, macaroni and cheese pies, and karaage chicken pies? Then follow your nose to Burleigh’s new(ish) seaside outpost, Pie Pie. Absolutely everything (from the pastry to the tomato sauce) is made in house from scratch daily, all of the meat is grass fed and the produce is sourced locally. Yep, this lot take the pie game very seriously.

The Bread SocialTweed Heads: In true Bread Social style, the pies here take a delicious shift away from your everyday varieties. Think slow-braised beef cheek topped with minted peas and a potato floater, and the Balter Bunny Pie – wild rabbit braised in Balter’s brown ale with mustard seed and winter veg. You’ll want these in your pie hole immediately.

Burleigh BakerBurleigh: Handmade by possibly the most passionate bunch of bakers around, the Burleigh Baker pies are crafted using two types of fermented pastry and filled with high-quality ingredients such as hormone-free sous vide chicken fermented with koji.

5B2F Bakehouse, Chirn Park: Owner and pastry chef Moonsun Yu creates two types of pies here. One is a slow-cooked pulled beef and gravy filling encased in glorious buttery pastry, the other a creamy chicken-breast and mushroom pie, swimming in real bechamel sauce. They taste as dreamy as they sound.

Paddock BakeryMiami: Do yourself a favour and go to Paddock, order a slow-cooked beef, smoked-bacon and cheddar-cheese pie, complete with buttery, flaky hand-made puff pastry. It comes with house-made ketchup and there’s an option to add a slice of sourdough with butter on the side – definitely do this.

Flour Bakery, Southport: Pie lovers know they are in good hands at Flour Bakery in The Brickworks on Ferry Road. If you haven’t had the butter chicken pie here, you haven’t lived. There’s also an award-winning wagyu beef pie, a kid-friendly old-fashioned minced-meat variety, plus the likes of chicken and leek, wagyu beef with mushy peas, and a glorious lamb-curry pie.

Fosters Bakery, Nobby Beach: When a company has no need for a website and/or a social media presence, you know they must be doing something right and Foster’s Bakery at Nobbys is certainly no exception. With 11 ridiculously tasty flavour combinations on offer, it’s a tough choice but our pick is definitely the lamb and rosemary pie. Just pop a small amount of tomato sauce on top (just a tiny squirt) and thank us later.

Fuel Bakehouse Currumbin and Cabarita: Forget servo pies filled with meat of questionable quality, Fuel’s pies are baked fresh throughout the day using seven-hour slow cooked beef. In fact, the deep-dish pies are so tasty, the oven is constantly firing to keep up with the strong demand. Pay a visit to its Currumbin bakehouse or venture south of the border to Caba for your fix.

Yatala Pies, Yatala: What’s a trip to Brisbane without a casual snack stop at Yatala Pies? This OG bakehouse churns out over 3,500 pies a day, with a huge selection of meat and vegetarian varieties. Start with a pepper steak pie and finish with an apple pie … with cream.

Coolangatta Pie Shop: Satisfying rumbling tummies since 1964, this Cooly institution is definitely a worthy addition to the list. While they are all deliciously appetising, our pick is the venue’s specialty steak, bacon and cheese pie. Like all good pie shops should be, it’s open straight through from 6:00 am Friday until 5:00 pm on Sunday, perfect for the late-night munchies after a (too many) few ales.

We know there are heaps of great pies on the Gold Coast, so consider that the tip of the iceberg! Got a secret pie spot we should know about? Email [email protected]
