The round-up: wrap your mitts around the Gold Coast’s best pies

If winter has you craving deliciously warm comfort food, you’re not alone! Sometimes you just can’t beat the satisfying crunch of the crispy, flaky exterior and the gooey, steamy centre of a good old-fashioned pie. From not-so-dirty street pies to the more exotic varieties, we’ve round-up some of the coast’s best pies to sink your teeth into.

Pie Pie, Burleigh Heads: Like the sound of chunky porterhouse steak pies, beef brisket and four-cheese macaroni pies and Thai chicken curry pies? Then follow your nose to Burleigh’s seaside outpost, Pie Pie. Absolutely everything (from the pastry to the tomato sauce) is made in house from scratch daily, all of the meat is grass fed and the produce is sourced locally. Yep, this lot take the pie game very seriously.

Burleigh BakerBurleigh: Handmade by possibly the most passionate bunch of bakers around, the Burleigh Baker pies are crafted using two types of fermented pastry and filled with high-quality ingredients. Grab them in flavours like classic beef mince, chicken, leek, pea and tarragon and slow-cooked pork belly and black-eye peas. These flaky gems are truly some of the best.

Paddock BakeryMiami: Do yourself a favour and go to Paddock to order a steak, bacon and cheese pie, complete with buttery, flaky hand-made puff pastry. Oh, and have you tried the butter-chicken curry pie? The slow-cooked tender curry is encased in the flaky pastry with just the right amount of kick, making it the perfect winter warmer.

The Main Beach Bakery, Main Beach: Home to the famous boozy Jack Daniels Pie, The Main Beach Bakery is the perfect pit-stop for a post-beach-walk pie. The Tedder Avenue pastry haven boasts a heap of classic flavour combos like cheese and bacon, chunky steak, and chicken and veg, which can be paired with a Fonzie Abbott brew.

The Bread SocialTweed Heads and Currumbin Waters: In true Bread Social style, the pies here take a delicious shift away from your everyday varieties. The specials are ever-changing, but one thing is for sure – you’ll want these in your pie hole immediately.

Flour Bakery, Southport: Pie lovers know they are in good hands at Flour Bakery in The Brickworks on Ferry Road. If you haven’t had the butter chicken pie here, you haven’t lived. Past flavours have also included a wagyu beef pie, an old-fashioned minced-meat variety, plus the likes of chicken and leek, wagyu beef with mushy peas, and a glorious lamb-curry pie.

Fosters Bakery, Nobby Beach: When a company has no need for a website and/or a social media presence, you know they must be doing something right and Foster’s Bakery at Nobbys is certainly no exception. With a huge selection of ridiculously tasty flavour combinations on offer, it’s a tough choice but we know you’re up for the challenge.

Fuel Bakehouse Currumbin and Cabarita: Forget servo pies filled with meat of questionable quality, Fuel’s pies are baked fresh throughout the day using seven-hour slow cooked beef. In fact, the deep-dish pies are so tasty, the oven is constantly firing to keep up with the strong demand. Pay a visit to its Currumbin bakehouse or venture south of the border to Caba for your fix.

Yatala Pies, Yatala: What’s a trip to Brisbane without a casual snack stop at Yatala Pies? This OG bakehouse churns out over 3500 pies a day, with a huge selection of meat and vegetarian varieties. Start with a pepper steak pie and finish with an apple pie … with cream.

Kirra Beach Bakery, Kirra: The super-friendly team and drool-inducing pies are two excellent reasons to head to Kirra Beach Bakery. The much-loved locale slings an array of classic pies – go for a family size if you can’t be bothered cooking (or just really love pies). Make sure you grab a sweet treat for after – you can thank us later.

Coolangatta Pie Shop, Coolangatta: Satisfying rumbling tummies since 1964, this Cooly institution is definitely a worthy addition to the list. While they are all deliciously appetising, our pick is the venue’s specialty steak, bacon and cheese pie. Like all good pie shops should be, it’s open straight through from 6:00 am Friday until 5:00 pm on Sunday, perfect for the late-night munchies after a (too many) few ales.

We know there are heaps of great pies on the Gold Coast, so consider that the tip of the iceberg! Got a secret pie spot we should know about? Email us here
