Beachfront watering hole The Miami Tavern lifts the lid on its multi-million-dollar transformation

Beachfront pub The Miami Tavern, affectionately known to many as The Sharky or The Shark Bar, has finally unveiled its highly anticipated transformation. Whether you were a passionate regular at the storied watering hole or The Sharky just wasn't really your jam, there's one thing we can all agree on – the two-level Miami icon, which has enjoyed long, rich history as a bar, bistro and live-music venue, boasts one of the best beachside locations on the coast. While it has served locals well, the ageing building was in need of an overhaul, so owners ALH Group embarked on a multi-million-dollar re-build of the longstanding site.

After nearly six months of construction, final works are set to wrap up this week on the former tavern venue, which is now dubbed The Miami. The brand-new beachside spot now boasts a bright, coastal-inspired fit-out that sprawls across two levels, including the now-open upper level featuring a 200-plus-seat bistro and a seated deck area with views of the beach and the neighbouring Miami hill. The bistro menu features elevated versions of your favourite pub-style classics (think burgers, fish and chips, chicken parmigiana and pizzas) as well as a hefty offering of local seafood, a raft of different steaks off the grill and a selection of vibrant salads. The dining level, which opened in November, also features an impressive bar area that’s armed with local and Australian beers (including gluten-free and zero-alcohol beers), wines, spirits and a series of share-style cocktails.

Downstairs on street level, finishing touches are being completed on The Miami’s brand-new beer garden, sports bar and TAB, which will open its doors this Saturday December 7. The bar has been completely opened up, and now boasts beach views and a breezy outdoor seating area, with a total inside-out capacity for around 300 patrons. Here lies a further 20 beer taps and an even wider selection of beverages compared to upstairs (beers, wines, ciders, cocktails, spirits, ginger beers – no matter what you sip, it’s here). Food is also served in the beer-garden area, with snackers able to order the likes of burgers, pizzas, steaks and more off a slightly condensed menu of pub eats.

The Miami’s dining area is now open, while the downstairs beer garden and bar will be open from this weekend. For opening hours and contact details, head over to our Stumble Guide.
