First, let us point out that you can still get The Bread Social’s famous pork, apple and sage sausage rolls, sweet pastries and loaves of tasty sourdough as normal – the original grab-and-go space still operates as is. While you’re gazing at the danishes in the cabinet, just cast your eyes right and you’ll see that the bakery’s former beautician neighbour is now home to The Bread Social’s first sit-down cafe space, dotted with share tables and bar seating for around 50. Much like the process of crafting its delicious breads, the expansion of The Bread Social was slow and sustainable. Amid the negative puff around gluten, sugar and dairy, the trio nailed the art of crafting artisan baked goods, but they knew they wanted to spread their wings with an ancillary food offering that would see their ethos of seasonal, local and responsible eating shine even brighter. Two years after opening in Tweed Heads, the talented threesome finally took the leap to expand with plated menu.
Every ingredient in The Bread Social kitchen and bakery is traceable (mainly to the local area) and is produced sustainably, forming the basis of a concise menu of just six items that will change every day or two, depending on what’s accessible and in season from local farms and trawlers. Think light and tasty plates like heirloom tomatoes with Byron Bay burrata, line-caught kingfish with horseradish creme, and a charred whole corn cob with a dollop of miso butter. The newly expanded kitchen aims to reduce and reuse food wastage where possible, so you can expect pickled and fermented additions to pop up, as well as creative accompaniments made from re-purposed bread – like the creamy rye-bread sauce that is served generously as a side to chargrilled asparagus. One dessert will make its way to the rotating menu, giving the pastry chefs the freedom to plate more delicate versions of their sweet delights – we’re talking Ballina honey panna cotta with wild raspberries and blueberries, encased by a lemon-ash meringue.
