Having won over Coolangatta’s coffee-loving crowd, The Black Sheep Espresso Baa has added a new venue in Currumbin to the flock. Nestled next door to Zipang Japanese restaurant, the new neighbourhood locale is essentially a larger version of its southern sister with the same chilled vibes you’ve come to know and love. With the additional space comes exciting new men-ewe (sorry, couldn’t resist) items that stand alongside the long-time classics including bacon and egg rolls and The Michael, which is named after a Coolangatta customer who continually ordered all of the sides on one plate before they eventually just added it to the menu. If you’re partial to the odd acai bowl, you won’t be disappointed with Black Sheep’s variation. Rather than arriving at your table in a plastic bowl, the acai is scooped into perfect quenelles that makes you feel like you’re having ice-cream for breakfast (now that’s a hashtag we can get behind). The venue’s owners Dinesh Nair and his wife Nimi Sharma have gone to great lengths to create dishes with bold flavour combinations such as crab omelette and deliciously fresh poke bowls with hot yoghurt sauce.
Whilst the vibe here is fairly casual and relaxed, one thing they do take very seriously is the coffee. Here, coffee is not a product but an experience and there are five difference sized experiences to choose from ranging from the piccolo-sized weaner through to the gigantic, four-shot Shepherd. The beans are from Yatala’s Open House Coffee Roasters and at any given time there are up to three unique single origins to try. If coffee isn’t your drink of choice, opt for a deliciously healthy smoothie instead.
