Tarte to-go – Burleigh’s famed pastry emporium opens a takeaway window for bagels and brews

Tarte Bakery & Cafe has become the go-to spot for breakfast basking in the sunshine, lazy brunches and pastry-filled feasts. So popular, in fact, that it's not uncommon to be greeted with a line out the door. Despite the fast-moving nature of the queue, Tarte's owner Chloe Watts, who is a self-professed perfectionist, sought to find a resolution that better catered to both the lingering lunchers as well as time-poor pals that seek to caffeinate on the fly. The solution manifested itself in the form of a dedicated takeaway window that slings brews and bagels. Here's everything you need to know ...

Tarte Bakery & Cafe melds a little bit of London with a hint of Paris and a dusting of West Village New York to deliver a mouth-watering assortment of rustic baked goods, hand-made sweet treats, brunch bites and specialty coffee daily. Now, the worldly wonderland has expanded to the space next door to establish a dedicated takeaway window that specialises in classic New York-style bagels and brews of the caffeinated kind. The succinct menu, which is only available to takeaway, is inspired by Chloe’s adventures abroad with the goal to transport your tastebuds to a streetside bodega in Greenwich Village. In true Tarte style, the noshery has put its own spin on the humble brunch bite with four loaded (and utterly delicious) bagel creations to sink your teeth into including the BEC (double-smoked streaky bacon, free-range egg, cheese, Tarte pickles, Gochujang mayo and a slathering of house-made barbecue sauce) and the LOX (sustainable New Zealand smoked salmon, pickled onion, chive and cucumber cream cheese and a scattering of crisp capers). The bagels are crafted in-house, the authentic way, which means they are boiled and baked to get that distinct bagel texture and served with a handful of house-made potato crisps for a little added crunch. If those pesky hunger pangs are hitting hard, there’s also a couple of seriously stuffed sandwiches to wrap your mitts around including a smashed egg and a BLT.

Those with a sweet tooth may also be pleased to know the takeaway counter is also brimming with Tarte’s signature baked goods including cinnamon-dusted cruller doughnuts and a stunning selection of fruit-topped tarts (the roast plum with crumble and custard is a holiday staple, in our humble opinion). Thirsty folk will be pleased to hear that Single O’s Reservoir blend flows through the machines to keep customers sufficiently caffeinated. Aesthetically, the takeaway is imbued with a similar vibe with elements of French style in the frosted glass windows, brushed gold embellishments, antique scales and a striking copper fire bucket Chloe stumbled upon in her travels. Whether you’re in the mood to linger a little longer or grab a tasty lunch to-go, Tarte now has both bases covered. For now, the takeaway window will be open for food from Friday through to Sunday with plans to extend after Christmas. Speaking of, if you’re in charge of Christmas dessert, Tarte Bakery & Cafe has opened pre-orders for its delectable selection of festive pies including cherry, pecan and a baked ricotta cheesecake.
