Coffees, poke bowls and hawker rolls – Stones Throw arrives in Currumbin

It was a sad day when Stones Throw cafe announced it was being forced to leave its digs on the corner of the Old Burleigh Arcade (to make way for the light rail) after four years of delighting locals with quality coffee, tasty eats and fun vibes. Well, Burleigh's loss is Currumbin's gain, with Stones Throw 2.0 coming to life again on Station Street, taking over the tree-lined premises formerly occupied by Neighbourhood Espresso.

Stones Throw’s owners – brother-and-sister team Cameron Chartres (head chef) and Melanie Windsor – embraced the forced relocation and decided to take their popular daytime cafe into an exciting new era. The duo has given the former Neighbourhood Espresso site (for those unfamiliar, it’s just opposite the Currumbin RSL) a freshen up and refurnishing to make the 65-seat venue their own. You can grab a spot inside, out on the footpath or settle under the trees in the kid-friendly garden area with a Fonzie Abbott coffee while you decide on which of Cameron’s innovative dishes you’ll be tackling.

Stones Throw’s menu features a mix of much-loved mainstays and new brunch-style dishes, sure to lure Burleigh regulars a little further south while also delighting its new Currumbin crew. Start your day with the coconut-sugar-cured-prawn omelette with house-made smoked-chilli sambal, a mouth-watering breakfast burrito jammed with potato hash, an omelette, chorizo and a punchy bloody Mary salsa, or for a sweet treat there’s the raspberry and ricotta souffle pancakes with a berry coulis and creme fraiche. The menu takes a spicy turn at brunch with the Saag Aloo Hash (pan-fried potato and spinach with chilli scrambled eggs, Indian bread and dahl dipping sauce) and the beef-mince rendang, topped with a fried egg and buttered sourdough.

Come lunchtime, you can wrap your paws around sticky pork tacos, a line-caught-fish burger with lemon-garlic mayo, Hawaiian-style poke bowls with kimchi and soy-braised wakame, or Stone’s Throw’s signature bibimbap with crunchy brown rice, braised beef, crispy fried egg and gochujang-spiked barbecue sauce. There are plenty of on-the-go options in the cabinet, including sourdough toasties and hand-held hawker rolls with fillings like scrambled eggs with saag, chilli and potato hash, as well as daily baked treats including brownies, cruffins and croissants.

Stone’s Throw 2.0 is now open! Head to the Stumble Guide for its opening hours and contact details.
