Crumpets are having a moment right now. Sitting somewhere between toast and pancakes, the humble crumpet was a breakfast staple for most of us growing up. Crispy underneath, light and fluffy on top – and best served with a generous schmear of butter, which slowly melts away into the honeycomb-like holes to make every bite even more enjoyable than the last. If that has ignited some delicious nostalgia for you, then don't reach for the mass-produced packet variety. You're a grown up now. Let us introduce you to the Sourdough Crumpet Co.

For former Sydney-based chef Tim Sherwin, hand-making sourdough crumpets from his new hometown in the Northern Rivers region was merely a hobby so he could treat his family and friends. Then, late last year, he started selling his rounds of goodness at the Murwillumbah markets under the guise Sourdough Crumpet Co. – and local folk quickly developed a taste and new-found addiction in Tim’s organic fermented sourdough crumpets. When the global pandemic hit, the markets closed – so Tim took to wholesaling his crumpets at local cafes across the Tweed and Gold Coast regions and, in a bid to make sure locals could keep having comforting crumpets at home, he also launched a home-delivery service.

It’s with few ingredients and a whole heap of patience and love that Sourdough Crumpet Co.’s products come to life. Tim tends to a sourdough starter daily, which is used alongside a trio of flours (spelt, wholemeal and bakers) and other organic ingredients to create a unique batter that ferments for a full 24 hours before hitting the hot plate. Think of them as a higher-quality, more refined and healthier version of the crumpets you had in your childhood – and he’s even perfected a vegan version for the plant-based folk.

While you’ll see these bad boys gracing the menus at Gold Coast cafes like Blackboard, Jeffersons, Next Door Espresso and Dust Temple (to name a few), locals can order the moreish, fluffy crumpets for themselves – in packs of six or 12 – and have them delivered straight to their door. Each pack comes with your choice of preserve like plum jam, local honey or a passionfruit or lemon-myrtle curd, which you can smother on top. It’s still early days for Sourdough Crumpet Co., so the delivery area is currently covering the southern end from Murwillumbah up to Varsity Lakes. While it’s set to expand quite soon, if you fall outside of the delivery area you can opt to grab your pack from one of the pick-up points – there’s Blackboard or Dust Temple north of the border, and Hymn and Dulcie & Edna for those that live just over.
