Indonesian street-food eatery Skewers lands in Broadbeach

If you've spent a bit of time in Bali over the years, then you'd be familiar with traditional Indonesian cuisine. Do flavour-packed dishes like nasi goreng ring a bell? While the coast is peppered with the likes of Japanese, Thai and Chinese eateries, you'll find very few dedicated Indonesian restaurants around town. Toowoomba's popular Indo-style street-food eatery Skewers is here to fill the void, opening the doors to its second venue in Broadbeach just last week.

As its name suggests, Skewers is all about – you guessed it – skewers. Well, skewered meats to be more specific. An open charcoal grill (similar to a Japanese robata grill) is used to perfect these street-style delicacies, which sees tender meats like lamb, chicken, beef and pork marinated in mouth-watering sauces before being charred and served with sides like pineapple pickle and rice. Don’t fret if meat isn’t your thing – you can much on crispy-tofu or all-vegetable skewers, and sneak in a few cheeky vegetarian spring rolls while you’re at it.

The menu is designed to share – you can grab a swag of skewers and a slow-cooked lamb rendang curry, and pair it with sides like crispy pork dumplings with housemade spicy soy and a couple of giant chicken spring rolls. If you’re up for a truly authentic feast, then the street-food platters will be your go-to and feature all of the skewers plus delicious additions like pan-fried beef pockets, crispy fried chicken drumsticks and piping-hot dumplings. No Indonesian feast is complete without a Bintang beer – grab them ice-cold by the bucket and tuck in.
