Breezy sips and sunset dips – at long last, Siblings has opened its doors on Kirra’s famed foreshore

If you grew up on the Goldie, it's pretty likely you have fond memories of salty, sun-soaked days spent surfing and swanning around Kirra Beach before retiring for a feed at the dine-in Pizza Hut. It was a rite of passage, of sorts, and the backdrop for countless celebrations, childhood birthdays and family dinners during its 40-year tenure. When the iconic pizza place closed its doors for the last time in 2019, all eyes were on the City of Gold Coast to announce its eagerly anticipated successor. At long last, we've got our first taste of Siblings, and friends, it does not disappoint. The chic new beachside eatery opened its doors this week like a breath of fresh, salty air to the famed foreshore. Here's everything you need to know about this impressive newcomer ...

The self-serve ice-cream may be gone, but there are plenty of other reasons to fall in love with Siblings. As its name suggests, Siblings is a family affair for the well-known Cianci family, who also brought us Edgewater and The Fish Emporium at Capri on Via Roma. While parents Peter and Tracey are still very much involved, Siblings is largely the handiwork of their children – TJ, Jarrod, Hannah and Jarrod’s wife Bonnie. The boys, in particular, grew up surfing Kirra every weekend, so it was important to them to create something meaningful in this landmark location. The extraordinary space was designed by Space Cubed Design Studio and brought to life by Zero 9 Constructions, underpinned by a brief to restore the much-loved Kirra Pavilion building to some of its original 1920s glory, while giving it a fresh and modern makeover in the process. Underpinning the entire design process was that unforgettable view. Whether you pull up a seat on the open-air deck, or inside in the main dining area, your gaze is never far from the ocean thanks to expansive bi-fold doors that invite the salty air to flow throughout the venue, adding to the overall sensory experience. Aesthetically, the 200-seat venue serves up some serious 1950s-inspired Miami Beach vibes with a palette of pale green, peach and crisp white. Custom-built tiled planter boxes add pops of greenery and iconic imagery of Kirra in its heyday adorn the walls.

When it comes to the menu, chef Blake Fewtrell (who started working with the Cianci family many years ago as a dish-hand at Edgewater) has compiled a list of what he calls modern-Australian cuisine with a strong focus on fresh seafood and share plates. Inspired by Siblings’ unparalleled location, the succinct brunch menu ranges from a wholesome Green Goodness bowl (charred greens, avocado, lashings of miso-cashew cream, sprouts and seeds) through to the indulgent fried chicken and waffles with whipped caramelised butter and a drizzle of hot honey. Come midday, the menu flips to its lunch and dinner offering that caters to those who fancy a light bite, through to more substantial plates. Those interested in the former can slurp back freshly shucked oysters and tuck in to Baja fish tacoschargrilled king prawns and popcorn cauliflower. The larger selections meander from free-range chargrilled chicken to 24-hour beef short rib and grilled Moreton Bay bugs with king prawns. The drinks list, which is aptly entitled ‘Liquid Journey’, has been meticulously crafted by the venue’s insanely talented mixologist to include an extensive selection of wine, local beers and no less than 52 signature cocktails. The impressive venue expertly navigates the line between casual and casually refined dining, so whether you’re fresh off the beach in search of coffee or you’re settling in for a long lunch, you’ll feel right at home at Siblings.
