Palm Beach’s new eatery Scott’s Luncheonette & Bar delivers a winning trifecta of sandwiches, coffee and wine

If you're not yet familiar with the name Perry Scott, you soon will be. Perry has shaken and stirred sips for some pretty famous faces around the world, having first learned the craft from New York's Dale DeGroff (A.K.A. The Cocktail King) before moving on to London’s Match Bar Group, as well as some of Soho’s most renowned cocktail bars including Milk & Honey and The Player. Inspired to pioneer a drinks revolution here in his home state, Perry opened Lark Food & Drink in Brisbane as well as a roving cocktail bar The Dispense Station, which toured the country at major music events (remember those?), picking up a stack of accolades along the way. Now, Perry has turned his attention towards the food side of things and has opened a laid-back beachside eatery called Scott’s Luncheonette & Bar right here on the Gold Coast. Here's everything you need to know ...

Housed in the former Luka’s Fish and Chips site on the Gold Coast Highway in Palm Beach, Scott’s Luncheonette & Bar specialises in three things – really excellent sandwiches, coffee and wine. The quaint 42-seat, all-white venue boasts the kind of low-key, breeze-in and breeze-out vibe that can take you from early morning to early evening. Scott’s Luncheonette & Bar opens at 7:00 am from Wednesday through to Sunday with a selection of flaky pastries perched on the counter alongside a few ready-made options in the cabinet for those who are pressed for time. If, however, you are keen to savour the experience – there’s a scattering of high and low tables lining the venue as well as a couple of street-fronting seats to park your keister and peruse the mouth-watering menu. When it comes to the food, Perry has crafted a constantly evolving offering that is intentionally simple-yet-delicious. Let’s get one thing clear, when we say ‘sandwiches’, we’re not talking a slather of Vegemite between two pieces of bread – we’re talking proper, Italian-style paninis using ciabatta bread from The Bread Social and Brasserie and loaded with some top-notch toppings that are a meal in itself. The Brekky Sanga is guaranteed to quash any pesky morning pangs with a hefty serve of scrambled eggs, hash brown, spinach and cheese – add bacon and brown sauce or grilled halloumi for a little something extra. From 10:00 am, the line-up gets a little more extensive with more to wrap your mitts around ranging from chicken with coconut-and-ginger chilli jam through to the Mexican Pork, which is piled high with eight-hour slow-cooked pork, pickled red onion, salsa, crushed corn chips, crumbled feta and Oaxaca cheese. Add a side of pork broth for dunking, and you have yourself a mighty fine feast. As the day drifts into evening, the menu pivots once again to feature tapas-style plates alongside charcuterie and cheese platters.

As for the drinkables, Perry has resisted the urge to go totally OTT, and instead opted to keep things simple with cold-pressed juices, brews from Veneziano Coffee Roasters and a fun and ever-changing selection of wine ranging from punchy pet-nats to chilled reds with a contingent of biodynamic, organic and Australian vino. The cocktails, or Scottails as they’re called here, offer a range of easy-to-drink selections such as Mimosa Du Jour and Garibaldi, a low-alcohol, Campari-based sip that is perfect for brunch. Perry is bringing back the martini with five different kinds on offer, but if you’re looking to reminisce on days past opt for The Strummer – a refreshing concoction of Ketel One vodka, fresh passionfruit, lime, falernum syrup, and ginger beer topped with Angostura bitters – which also happens to be the official drink of Splendour in the Grass. Speaking of, Radiohead fans may also appreciate the rare music memorabilia adorning the wall, a couple of pieces from Perry’s own collection.

If sandwiches, coffee and wine are among your favourite things, skip over to Scott’s Luncheonette & Bar‘s Stumble Guide for opening times.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
