Florida Gardens – the island pocket within Broadbeach Waters – has welcomed a new neighbourhood hub. What was originally the site of Society of Florida cafe (and most recently the Trembling Cup) has fallen into the hands of local duo Nenad Miljkovic and Sandra Ostojic, who quietly opened the doors to their first cafe venture Sandrino Kitchen & Bar earlier this month.

After weeks of renovations, the corner space (which sits just up from Gilston Four hairdressers) has re-opened to the public, giving Florida Gardens, Broadbeach Waters and Surfers Paradise locals their daily dose of coffee, breakfast, lunch and bites – with a dinner and bar service on Friday and Saturday nights to follow in the coming weeks (once the liquor licence is approved). For now, it’s daytime eats, with Sandrino’s opening menu offering up a bunch of classic breakfast, brunch and lunch favourites.

For morning bites, there’s everything from simple bacon and eggs through to a decadent French-vanilla brioche toast with grilled banana and strawberry. The all-day menu also features heartier eats like a crispy chicken burger with slaw inside a toasted brioche bun, and crumbed fish with house-grown herbs and hand-cut chips – while those looking for lighter bites can opt for the Green Bowl, topped with Brussels sprouts, poached egg and basil pesto. Got the kids in tow? Babycinos are free (yes, free!) and there’s an Astro-turfed play area out the back with giant games and kid-friendly seating, which will open in the next fortnight.

Sandrino’s dinner service will kick off in the coming weeks – we’re told locals can expect a range of mezze plates, pizzas, pastas and more, with some dishes boasting a slight Serbian lean. Cocktails, beers and wine will also be flowing, with live music to set the scene.
