Red Earth Brewery opens its flagship brewhouse and taproom in Cudgen

Set against the shade of avocado trees amid the rolling hills of Cudgen (inland from Kingscliff) lies Northern Rivers' newest beer haven, Red Earth Brewery. Last weekend, the doors to the new farmhouse-style community brewery swung open, unveiling its debut selection of beers to a batch of thirsty locals.

Encased by a blend of corrugated iron, recycled doors and stained-glass windows, Red Earth Brewery’s farm-style brewhouse is located on an avocado plantation along Cudgen Road – it enjoys pristine views, including glimpses of Mt Warning, and is all about showcasing the very best of what the northern New South Wales region has to offer. Head brewer Zeke Hower (formerly of Stone & Wood) oversees the newly opened 12-hectolitre facility, which is situated just up from popular working farm and cafe Farm & Co – Red Earth even treats Farm & Co’s resident pigs to all of the spent grain from the brew tanks.

The opening of the brewery and taproom marks the release of Red Earth’s flagship series of four beers, with the offering to be bolstered by more releases over the coming months. There’s the golden-bodied Rising Sun Pale Ale, along with an IPA, pilsner and mid-strength lager, which can be sampled straight from the source from Fridays to Sundays from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Beer-friendly eats will also be on offer, with bar snacks like beef jerky and smoked Sicilian olives served up alongside fare from a rotating series of food trucks. Oh, and if you don’t do beer, there’s a rotating selection of Jilly Wines and locally made Gurbuchi (Aboriginal fermented tonic) available to sip. It’s certainly early days for Red Earth Brewery and there are big plans for the year ahead, including delving into weddings and events, as well as expanding the food offering to make the most of the region’s produce bowl.
