Poke bowls and coconuts – Sunshine Coast-born Raw + Rice makes its Gold Coast debut

Our pals in Brisbane recently got a taste of popular Sunshine Coast-born poke-bowl bar Raw + Rice when it opened in The Valley’s California Lane in June. Now it’s our turn, with Ben Glass and James Breust, the brains behind the sleek, sustainably minded poke-bowl concept, unveiling their first Gold Coast location in Coolangatta last week.

Boasting beach views from its prime position along Marine Parade, the Gold Coast’s first Raw + Rice is filling a wide-open gap for poke bowls on the southern end. Buoyed by demand for the fresh, variable, sustainable and flavour-packed menu served across their Sunshine Coast and Brisbane locations, Ben and James, alongside store-development manager Zain Boag, set their sights on bringing the same nutritious, colourful, made-to-order poke bowls that have put Raw + Rice on the map to the health-conscious folk of the Gold Coast. The new addition is bright, sleek and inviting – and you can walk in sandy-footed straight off Greenmount beach.

The menu, described as a ‘nod of gratitude to our abundant surrounds’, foregrounds local produce. Every bite of these bowls, which are built before your eyes, has been carefully considered – from the ethically sourced seafood, right down to the local ingredients used in the sauces that are lovingly drizzled on at the end. While it’s solely poke bowls on offer, the options and combinations are truly endless. Take the guesswork out with one of the suggested bowl combinations using the key proteins of salmon, tuna and ocean trout, white fish, soy tofu and poached chicken, or go wild and customise your own. Choose your base (rices, quinoa or mixed greens), the protein, then add a bit of ‘freshness’ like bean sprouts, wakame or edamame, before finishing with sauces and adding some crunch like coconut flakes or wasabi peas. Then, get sipping on kombucha, ice-cold Karma Cola or a fresh whole coconut, cracked open to order.
