Discover Pottsville’s Piccolo Mondo, the drool-inducing gelato shop worthy of a day trip

If you're a true gelato connoisseur, you'll know that there's nothing like a top-notch scoop – forget the flouro artificial colourings and sickly sweet flavours, and think quality ingredients that actually taste like the real thing (and don't give you a splitting sugar headache). Well, friends, look no further. Piccolo Mondo in Pottsville is serving up some of the best gelato around and trust us, it's worth the drive.

Stepping into the pastel-hued world of Pottsville’s Piccolo Mondo is a delightful surprise. The newcomer to the scoop scene hasn’t been open for long, but once you step inside it’s apparent this isn’t just any gelato shop. Melbournite Lisa Andrews moved north in 2019 with the intention of bringing the classic gelato that she loved at home to the Northern Rivers, and had every intention of opening shortly after her arrival. Well, 2020 happened, and you know how that turned out. Determined to open prior to Christmas, Lisa opened the doors to Piccolo Mondo on December 23 last year and has been slinging scoops to hordes of delighted locals and travellers alike ever since.

With an ethos focused on the use of local, natural and (where possible) organic ingredients, Piccolo Mondo gelato is truly something special. The creamy flavours like honeycomb and hazelnut use Barambah Organics milk as a base, while the fruit-based flavours are all seasonal. This means that the ever-changing line-up features flavours such as Terania Creek passionfruit, and there’s winter fruits like blood orange and mandarin on the horizon. One exception is the mango swirl, which is a little scoop of summer – Lisa collected local market mangoes throughout summer, pureeing them so that the fresh flavour infusion could be swirled through a creamy base later on. The cafe latte flavour features Byron Bay’s Marvell Street coffee and Sipp Instant brew, while the dairy-free chocolate is a decadent treat made with a Ratio Cocoa Roasters’ organic, vegan, 70 percent dark chocolate base. Even the waffle cones are local, with the Murwillumbah-based Scandinavian Cone Company almost guaranteed to convert any cup lover on the first go.
