Pavement Whispers: Burleigh Co-Op’s future, an Italian newcomer and Cooly’s rum revival

From whispers of new Italian dining spots to iconic cafe takeovers, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out ...

Orzo
The owners of popular Broadbeach dining space Social Eating House and Bar, nestled within Oracle Boulevard, have announced an exciting new venture within the same precinct. Italian restaurant Orzo will be the second venue for Social Eating House owner and executive chef Matthew Jefferson and wife Dayna, who are set to open the sophisticated new Amalfi Coast-inspired space at the end of November. Diners can expect an elegant-yet-relaxed atmosphere at Orzo, with handmade pasta to be the hero of the menu, with traditional dishes like cacio e pepe (pasta with parmesan and freshly cracked black pepper) on offer to give a nod to southern Italy. Serving lunch, dinner and everything in between, Orzo’s menu will also feature fresh seafood, cheese and house-cured meats, while the bar will focus on Italian wines, cocktails and the classic spritz. We’ll have a sneak peek inside Orzo ahead of its opening – stay tuned.

Burleigh Co-Op and Espresso Moto
Fans of Burleigh Co-Op (we know there are a lot you) we’ve got some news. Burleigh Co-Op has been taken over by the team from Palm Beach-born cafe Espresso Moto and will undergo a complete rebrand (with a new identity, menu and coffee) to position the venue under the Espresso Moto banner. Espresso Moto co-owner Jordan Stubbs has confirmed the takeover of the award-winning Burleigh Co-Op cafe, which opened in March this year in the former Burleigh Social space on Hibiscus Parade (just up from Paddock). The venue will remain open for coffee only over the coming days, and will resume food service either this weekend or early next week (keep an eye on Espresso Moto’s Instagram for exact timing closer to the weekend). An official re-launch is pegged for the coming weeks. The move marks the third venue for the Espresso Moto team, which also owns and operates cafes of the same name in Palm Beach and Coolangatta. The takeover will see the Burleigh Co-Op site renamed as Espresso Moto and a new menu to be rolled out as soon as possible, which we’re told will be similar to what is on offer at Palm Beach and Coolangatta, with a few new additions. Ensuring continuity of the Espresso Moto brand, the coffee will also change, with Allpress to be pouring from this weekend. While it’s hard to bid adieu to a favourite, locals can rest assured that their coffee, breakfast and lunch will be in great hands with the Espresso Moto team. We’ll have more details and a closer look at the new Burleigh-Miami incarnation of Espresso Moto shortly.

Baskk Rum Bar
The team from Baskk Kirra Point have unveiled a new rum bar – a private nook to the rear of the restaurant that shines the light on the ‘rum revival’. The Baskk Rum Bar, which opened officially last week, serves up a collection of rum-based cocktails and rum-spiked bar snacks, with drops from Tumbulgum distillery Husk widely used. You can sip on concoctions like Mr David (Husk Pure Cane, Davidson plum and blended lychee) and the Caipirinha Sticky Finger (Husk Pure Cane, finger lime and honeycomb), while nibbling plates of spiced-rum chicken wings, rum-glazed pork baos, and fruit cake with spiced cherries and vanilla-rum custard. The Baskk Rum Bar is open Friday to Sunday from 5:00 pm and is available for private functions.
