Pavement Whispers: Sweet treats and caffeine dispensaries, new openings to get excited about

This year has been a wild one with COVID-19 wreaking havoc on our much-loved hospitality industry (among others) so it's pretty exciting to see the rumour mill kick back in with whispers of sweet-treat dispensaries through to pretty Palm Springs-esque spaces to brunch and lunch. The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Palm Springs, Burleigh Heads
If you’re a regular traveller along the Gold Coast Highway, you would have definitely noticed the old two-storey Siam Orchid has undergone an eye-popping transformation. The all-white facade is the first taste of an LA-inspired cafe and lunch spot named Palm Springs, which is set to open its doors oh-so-soon. Details are yet to be revealed but we’re told to expect a dreamy, breezy cafe for breakfast, brunch, lunch and early arvos in the sunshine. We’ll have an inside look for you very soon!

Espresso Moto Mermaid, Mermaid Beach
Have you heard? Popular Palm Beach eatery and caffeine dispensary Espresso Moto is spreading the love and heading north with a second venue of the same name in Mermaid Beach. An overhaul of the former Pizza Capers on the corner of Sunshine Boulevard and Markeri Street  is currently underway but patrons can expect the same delicious menu, fun atmosphere, killer music (it’s really great) and Allpress coffee that we’ve all come to know and love from its original Palmy haven. It’s hoped the crew will be throwing open the doors before Christmas so watch this space.

The Doughnut Boss, Pacific Fair
A friendly warning, folks – if you walk past The Doughnut Boss at Pacific Fair you will not (we repeat, will not) be able to walk away empty handed. The sweet-treat-slinging purveyors of happiness were previously perched at Robina Town Centre but have recently made the move to Broadbeach (you can find them down near Woolworths) and let’s just get one thing clear, these doughnuts are made fresh to order – yes you read right, to order so they’re still piping hot when you take that first, delicious bite. The cabinet is also brimming with a mouth-watering array of flavours ranging from the classic Nutella, jam and cinnamon to the Willy Wonka-esque Biscoff-custard and Oreo-loaded creations. If you’re not super keen to consume your entire day’s calories in one sitting, The Doughnut Boss is also the only place on the Gold Coast you’ll find Fit-Lato by the scoop, which is high protein, low sugar and low calorie ice-cream. They also do coffee.

Cinnabon, Robina Town Centre
If you’re yet to get caught up in the Cinnabon hype, allow us. This isn’t your average cinnamon roll – and you’ll realise that once you take that very first bite into the pillow-soft dough, which is infused with Makara cinnamon to create that unmistakable Cinnabon aroma. The rolls are generously covered in waves of sweet signature frosting, ensuring your tastebuds are hit with pure pleasure at each and every mouthful. Yep, it’s quite the experience and Gold Coasters, the sweet treats are coming our way with a space at The Kitchens at Robina Town Centre. The hoarding is up but so far that’s all we know. Watch this space but if you simply cannot wait, you can jump online and have some drool-worthy CinnaPacks delivered.

What a Catch!, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre
Fact – shopping is infinitely more fun after a glass (or two) of bubbles and a good feed. Well, shoppers, get excited because we’ve heard whispers of a new upmarket fish and chippery arriving at The Patio at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, just in time for all of your Christmas shopping expeditions (helloooo bug rolls and bubbles!). The new venue will be the latest culinary offering from award-winning chef Daniel Ridgeway, who also owns Little Truffle Dining Room & Bar in Mermaid Beach, BiN72 Coolangatta and BiN232 also at Pacific Fair and diners can expect prawn-and-bug milk buns, fresh fish sourced daily, oysters and sides.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
