Pavement Whispers: Custard Canteen, a new Nobby Beach bar and Caribbean cafes

From whispers of Bam Bam's new custard-themed sibling to a new Nobby Beach watering hole, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Custard Canteen
The dream team from Mermaid’s Bam Bam Bakehouse and Chinderah’s Cubby Bake House have another venue in the works! Owners Ursula and Ben Watts (who also founded Paddock Bakery) have commenced construction on Custard Canteen, a pastry-slinging sweets haven at Tallebudgera Creek. Now, Talle Creek regulars (hello, that’s us) would be familiar with Ursula and Ben’s hole-in-the-wall Neptune Kiosk, which sits beneath the Neptune Royal Life Saving Club overlooking the water. About a year ago, they also took over the cafe space that sat at the front of the Leisure Centre building at Talle Creek (just behind Neptune) and dished up coffees, bacon and egg rolls, and bites – until this week, when they closed it and began gutting the space to make way for what will soon be Custard Canteen. While Bam Bam has the croissant and Cubby has the baguette, the details of what the ‘hero’ of Custard Canteen will be is being kept under wraps for now. Though, you can safely assume that lots of sweet, glorious, gooey custard will be involved. Custard Canteen is aiming to be open before Christmas – sit tight until then, we’ll have all of the details for you in December. Don’t fret – Neptune Kiosk isn’t going anywhere and will continue to operate as normal. All we can say is – bring on summer, custard treats and creek swims.

Mr.
Nobby Beach is set to welcome a sassy new watering hole and dining spot this spring. Sisters Shonel Alloway and Kylie Simpson, the dynamic duo behind neighbouring venues Forreal Kitchen and The Arc, will soon have a trifecta in the suburb, having recently taken over the adjoining real estate agency site to transform it into their third Nobby Beach venue – Mr. While the owners are keeping tight lipped on the exact details, we’ve been told that an electric-pink barnyard door will mark the spot of the new watering hole, which will serve drinks, share plates and dinner. The team are currently fine tuning the list of libations, set to feature a solid wine offering and a fun collection of cocktails. The new Nobby Beach nightspot is pegged for an October opening – we’ll have all of the details and a look inside Mr. once the pink barnyard door slides open!

Next Door Espresso and ST BARTS HQ
If you’ve noticed that luminous white building (with the giant portholes) coming to life on Burleigh’s Junction Road, here’s the low-down. It’s set to be a new Caribbean-style coffee, homewares and fine-art concept, as part of a collaboration between Tweed Heads coffee spot Next Door Espresso, luxe homewares haven St Barts and art-print company FINEPRINT co. Set to open in early September, Next Door Espresso and ST BARTS HQ will operate from 6:00 am Monday to Saturday, with Kim Piper and Simon Thompson of Next Door Espresso to over see the caffeine (pouring Moonshine Coffee) and food offering, which will be served alongside an impressive showcase of luxury homewares, one-of-a-kind artefacts, fashion, furniture, fine art and interior design. We’ll have more details and a look inside closer to the opening.
