Experience deliciously authentic Italian gelato at Coolangatta’s new gelateria Ottimo

There are some locales that have an unspoken reputation – when you know, you know. Ottimo on Marine Parade in Coolangatta is one of those places. The sweet gelateria opened its doors in December 2020 next door to Xenia Bar & Restaurant and is dishing up amazingly authentic gelato, flaky croissants, delightful danishes and top-notch brews of the caffeinated kind. Italian for 'excellent', Ottimo is firmly establishing itself as a bonafide local gem and once you get a glimpse of the goods, you’ll see why.

Whilst Ottimo is technically the new kid on the block, it’s the handiwork of Giordana and Davide – who previously owned My Gelato in Kirra for 11 years and continue to own Broadbeach’s dessert den of the same name. The pair made the move from their homeland of Italy in 2009 with a diploma from the Gelato University in Bologna, northern Italy (seriously, where do we enrol?) and have been crafting happiness-inducing gelato the Italian way (without preservatives, stabilisers and artificial colours) every day since. Over the years, Giordana and Davide have tried and tested hundreds of different flavour combinations to find the perfect balance between authenticity and Australian tastes and, judging from the queue out the door, they’ve got it nailed. The resulting line-up of 30 tastebud-tingling flavours changes regularly and features classics including Biscotto and Stracciatella (Italian choc chip) through to the crowd-favourite OMG (rich salted caramel with a thick layer of gooey Nutella on top) and Hint of Sicily (mandarin custard with pistachio-and-almond caramel).

Davide believes that, like food, gelato is connected to memories and helps to take you back to a special time and place in your life. If you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the masters at work through the gigantic glass window at the far end of the venue. Layer upon layer, the toppings are mixed in so that you get the complete flavour experience with every scoop. Along with the new venue came an expanded menu featuring coffee by Austria’s Julius Meinl and baked goods by Nobee’s Viennoiserie Lab in Currumbin Waters, which Giordana believes are just like the ones she grew up with in Italy. The space itself has been created by the same architect who was behind Dust Temple in Currumbin and features an eye-popping installation suspended from the ceiling as well as ample seating to savour the experience.
