Pavement Whispers: FuFu’s vegan sibling, spilt milk and meat buns on wheels

From whispers of new vegan eateries to meat buns on wheels, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

The Milkman’s Daughter
Gold Coast restaurateur Morgan Walsh is at it again! In her latest move, Morgan and partner Mary Steel have taken over Vintage Espresso in Mermaid Beach (which was more recently named Steele & Co) to create a vegetarian and vegan eatery called The Milkman’s Daughter. The space is located opposite Morgan’s other venues Poké Poké  and FuFu, and just a stone’s throw from her modern-Mexican eatery Bonita Bonita and adjoining bar Bon Bon. Yes, your maths is correct – this will be Morgan’s fifth venue in Mermaid Beach (we’re told it’s the last … for now). The Milkman’s Daughter will serve a vibrant vegetarian and vegan menu across lunch and dinner to start, along with a cabinet full of healthy and tasty on-the-go treats. The menu will remain fairly fluid, allowing Morgan and the chefs to push the boundaries and get creative in the meat-free arena. The Milkman’s Daughter is due to open around the end of May – we’ll have all the delicious details for you then.

Meat Buns
Like the sound of slow-cooked pork, pickles and cheese encased in a sphere of crispy dough? Then you’ll definitely want to stalk the coast’s newest street-food stall, Meat Buns, when it launches in April. Ex-Melbourne chef John Watt is currently finalising and perfecting these moreish meat buns, which kind of look like a Chinese pork bun, but have an even more delicious baked pizza-style dough. These morsels of goodness feature fillings like pulled beef and smoked cheddar, pulled eggplant with black-bean chilli, and chicken with Alabama white sauce, pickles and cheese topped with crispy chicken skin. We can’t wait for a taste – we’ll have all the mouth-watering details when Meat Buns hits the streets next month.

Spilt Milk Van
A new coffee caravan will be hitting the streets of the Gold Coast soon – but this little gem is far from the norm. Spilt Milk Van is the brainchild of three local mental health workers, who have collaborated to give the coast two great things – quality coffee (on wheels) and a place to have a chat … if you need it. Basically, Spilt Milk Van aims to remove the stigma that surrounds mental health. The whole concept is based around this simple ideation – talking about your feelings should be as easy as ordering your morning coffee. Makes sense, right? We all get a “how are you?” when we order a morning coffee, to which the majority of us answer, “good, thanks!”, but if you’re not actually that great and want to have a chat, then it’s encouraged. The van is a restored 1970s caravan affectionately known as Millie (cute!) and will be serving local Social Espresso coffee, doughnuts from D Point Ten, raw treats from The Raw Baller, plus savoury snacks and local teas. The Spilt Milk Van team hope to have Millie rolling by around June – keep your eyes peeled!

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
