Pavement Whispers: milky burgers, beachside distilleries and saucy wing bars

From whispers of mind-blowing burgers to new small-batch distilleries, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Milky Lane
One of Sydney’s most popular burger joints, Milky Lane, is coming to the Gold Coast! The first Milky Lane opened in Bondi in 2016, followed by Cronulla and Parramatta – now it’s the Gold Coast’s turn and we couldn’t be more excited (and hungry). Now, this is no ordinary burger joint – think over-the-top cocktails, DJs, hip-hop tunes, an eclectic fit-out and lots of drool-worthy burger porn. We’re talking burgs’ like The Kevin Bacon with two wagyu beef patties, four (four!) slices of American cheddar, maple-smoked bacon, truffle aioli, topped with more sauces and pickles. Though, it’s the Fat Tony that we’re really preparing ourselves for – that’s the name of Milky Lane’s limited-edition deep-fried lasagne burger, which sees a garlic-bread bun filled with deep-fried pieces of five-cheese lasagne, then smothered with pesto aioli and Napoletana sauce. Just take a moment to let that sink in. Yep, safe to say the burger offering here is pretty damn mind-blowing … aaaaand diet busting. The sweets are just as impressive – finish with a churro bowl filled with scoops of gelato and covered with dulce de leche and Nutella, then wash it all down with a boundary-pushing loaded thick shake. Phwoar. That’s a lot of news to digest. You’ll have a few more weeks to gird your loins and get yourself ready for this – Milky Lane Gold Coast, located on Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise, will open in late April. We’ll have all the mouth-watering details for you then!

Granddad Jacks
The Gold Coast is about to get a craft gin and whisky distillery! Father-and-son duo David and Luke Ridden are well underway with the construction of Granddad Jacks, which is set to produce small-batch whiskies and gins from the seaside hub of Miami. As an ode to David’s grandfather and Luke’s great grandfather, Granddad Jacks will be recreating age-old family recipes to formulate a series of boutique spirits, with the fit-out taking inspiration from the early 1900s era. The small-batch distillery, which will incorporate a bar area, is currently in the thick of construction on Miami’s Lemana Lane (just off Christine Avenue) and is expected to open its doors around mid-June. We’ll have all the details for you then!

King of the Wings
If you’re a lover of saucy chicken wings, then your shiny lips may be familiar with popular Brisbane food truck King of the Wings. Well, the owners of this finger-licking mobile eatery, Dylan and Katrina Pires, have announced their first bricks and mortar venue, which will open in Surfers Paradise in April just in time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The duo have collaborated with the Meter Maids (yes, as in the gold-bikini-wearing ladies that put money in expired parking meters) for a new 150-seat bar and eatery, which will be staffed by actual Meter Maids, while King of the Wings supply all of the edibles. We’re told to expect plenty of cocktails, beers and lots of saucy eats from piping-hot wings to saucy sliders. Keep your eyes peeled for this one over the next few weeks.
