Pavement Whispers: art bars, butchers, bakers and vego burger joints

From whispers of meat-free burger joints to rad new art bars, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Lord of the Fries
Lord of the Fries, known across Australia for its ethical meat-free fast food, is opening its first Queensland store in Surfers Paradise later this year. After starting out as a travelling food truck in 2004, Lord of the Fries opened its first venue in Melbourne back in late 2005. Now, the chain is serving its range of vegetarian burgers, hot dogs and fries across 15 stores throughout Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and across the ditch in Auckland. As the name suggests, the Lord of the Fries ethos is based around the founders’ love of French fries and food ‘made with love, not animals’. The golden, crunchy fries are the hero, served with a side of vegetarian burgers and hot dogs, onion rings, vegetarian nuggets, ‘phish and chips’, vegan milkshakes, all with plenty of gluten-free and vegan variations. The new Surfers Paradise venue will open its doors around September – we’ll give you the full low-down when it opens!

Fitz + Potts at M-Arts
Brett Fitzpatrick and Cassie Potts, the brains behind Brisbane’s popular Fitz + Potts bar in Nundah, are spreading the goodness south of the border with a second venue in Murwillumbah, called Fitz + Potts at M-Arts. The eclectic two-level space forms part of the new M-Arts precinct in the town’s CBD, which is currently home to a number of art and creative studios. The downstairs level is being transformed into a relaxed beer hall-type setting, which we’re told will be like a contemporary version of a traditional Belgian beer hall. The food is set to be modern market-style and 100 per cent vegan, with all produce (including the beer) sourced from between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. We can expect the aesthetics to be similar to its Nundah venue – there will be plenty of colour, whilst retaining the rustic elements and appealing decay of the warehouse. Upstairs will feature an elegant wine and cocktail bar – it’ll be opulent, but fun, and will reflect a similar offering to Nundah, with plenty of organic drinkables. The new Fitz + Potts at M-Arts is due to open in late 2017. We’ll keep you posted!

Butcher Baker
Bangalow’s newcomer Butcher Baker is adding to the buzz of activity south of the border. Byron Shire locals Paul and Amanda Coughran are opening Butcher Baker, located in the main strip of Bangalow, in early August. After running coffee shops and cafes in Melbourne over past years, the duo are combining a love for butchery, baking and beer with their new venue. Paul, a baker by trade (and also the son of a butcher) has incorporated an in-house gourmet bakery into the 70-seat venue, which will pump out baked goods, sourdoughs, coffee and take-away eats. Open seven days, Butcher Baker will serve dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, which is where the slow-cooked meats will come into play. Expect a hearty share-food menu with the likes of lamb ribs, briskets, pork sausages, lamb (and pork) shoulder, with an array of plant-based sides. This one will be well and truly worth the road trip. We’ll give you a sneak peek inside when it opens.
