Nahm Kitchen & Bar drops new-age Thai in the heart of Broadbeach

Traditional Thai cuisine has been turned on its head at Broadbeach's newest dining spot Nahm Kitchen & Bar. The casual newcomer, located within the The Oasis dining precinct, is pushing the boundaries of Thai cuisine, with ex-Etsu Izakaya chef Theemachit Chit Kaen (known as 'Coke') heading the kitchen.

Having been on the knives across Sydney since 2005 (including early tenure at popular Asian dining spot Alphabet St), chef Coke made the seachange to the Gold Coast in 2017 where he worked as sous chef at Mermaid Japanese hotspot Etsu. Now, Coke is back where his passion lies – contemporary Thai food. Nahm’s opening menu puts a reimagined spin on the classics, featuring a collection of innovative dishes designed to excite diners who are sticklers for tradition, while luring in those that historically aren’t huge fans of Thai cuisine. Absolutely everything on your plate, from the curries to the dipping sauces, is made completely from scratch on site, using local Gold Coast and Northern Rivers produce.

To start, there’s tasty plates like crispy pork belly with sweet tamarind and pickled green apple, and salt and five-spice fried squid, before moving onto warming bowls of aromatic tom yum soup. Those keen on the classics can opt for stir-frys or a green or red curry, while diners looking to experience left-of-centre Thai dishes can go for the chef’s specials, which will rotate regularly depending on the seasonality of local produce and seafood. Think crispy twice-cooked duck leg in a red curry with lychee and pineapple, chargrilled wagyu rump with roasted rice and a chilli-tamarind dipping sauce, and smoked lamb cutlets in ‘choochee’ curry with snake beans and kaffir-lime leaves. Finish with delicate desserts like the coconut panna cotta with a cashew-nut praline, or mango sorbet atop sticky rice, coconut cream and peanuts. Nahm is also equipped with a selection of wines, local craft beers and colourful cocktails infused with Thai aromatics.
